The Kaduna state police command has banned all activities of a volunteer security outfit, popularly known as Yan Sa Kai, in the state.

The state police public relations officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo, announced the ban in a statement he issued on Wednesday, August 21.

Igbere TV gathered that the police warned that no person or group of persons should parade themselves as Yan Sa Kai/Yan Bula and perform any form of voluntary security assignment within the state. He said that anyone who violates the order using the instrumentality of the law, would be dealt with decisively.

“The command, therefore, solicits the usual support from the members of the public to provide timely and useful information about criminal activities within their immediate environment in order to help the police to serve them better,’’ Sabo said.

Though the Nigerian Police must have suffered a battered image owing to frequent involvement of its members in quite a number of illicit activities and extrajudicial killings, I prefer their security services to these vigillante nonsense.

Some of these so-called volunteer groups are just groups of touts hiding under security services to carry out some heinous activities under the cover of darkness.

Yet they say they support and have even approved community policing. Rather than disband them why not train them and make them more accountable in collaboration with the state government? Just the same way they bomb and destroy 'illegal refineries' in the SS meanwhile we have no efficient refinery.
