Markets Shunning PSP Operators Will Be Shut, Says Bello by nairapark: 11:37am On Aug 27, 2019
The Lagos State Government has threatened to shut down markets and parks refusing to patronise the private sector participation waste operators in the state.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, said government was prepared to support the waste operators with equipment and loans.

In a statement on Monday by the Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Kunle Adeshina, Bello noted that the state believed that increasing the capacity of the waste operators would ensure they delivered on their mandate of clearing refuse.
“The commissioner said in the coming weeks, he would be meeting with the leaders of market men, women and parks to ensure that the parks and markets are always clean and people do not dump waste indiscriminately.

“He emphasised that there would be zero tolerance for indiscriminate dumping of refuse in all markets and parks, warning that the present administration would not hesitate to shut down any market or park that fails to engage the services of a PSP operator to properly dispose of its refuse,” the statement added.

The commissioner, the statement said, explained that part of the policy thrusts of the present administration was waste sorting and buy back to reduce the amount of waste generated and transported to the Olusosun dump.

He said with the renaming of the ministry to include water resources, which covered drainage services, there would be better efforts at clearing drains all year round.

Bello was also said to have disclosed plans by Lagos, Ogun and the World Bank, to revive a plan mooted five years ago to establish another landfill site in Ogun State.

“He stated that in about four to five years’ time, the only functional landfill site in the state which was at Olusosun would be filled up and there was the need to take advantage of a neighbouring state with landmass like Ogun State in preparing for any eventuality.

“He affirmed that the bulk of the work of the ministry would be devoted to refuse clearing, as well as ensuring a smooth running of the drainage systems,” the statement said.
