This is so sad and shameful.People who are supposed to protect CIVILIANS find more joy in OPPRESSING and BEATING CIVILIANS.These ANIMALS who regard themselves as HOMO SAPIENS or whatever should be brought to book.Justice should not only be enjoyed by the RICH,the poor and less priviledged need it most.I really hate this occurrence. |

Its really sad that things like this occur. These army, navy, Air-force men forget that they are supposed to protect Nigerians. But now its Nigerians like this poor man that should be protected from these uniform men. Some months ago on my way to work, a danfo driver for simply entering the front of an army guys car got the beating of his life. The man called lastma to stop the bus immediately. and the Lastma men did with fear. Before the driver could even try using the abeg technique some1 was talking about earlier, he was eating dust from the floor. He got kicked and tossed like football, it was like when Xabi Alonso is about to take a shot in football of something. I wonder when these military personnels would disappoint us by behaving mature for once. In as much as i respect them for their supposed job of protecting the country, I seriously have a huge disregard for their actions. Don't want to be insultive here in as much as its really itching me to blast the entities amongst them that carry out dastardly acts like this. I believe one day these things would be a thing of the past, then army men would fear the slightest threat from any civilian because of disciplinary actions that awaits. God bless Nigeria, but I think this incident should be taken up for action. |

The major problem of this nation is the ordinary or innocent nigerians who feels unconcirned on issues like this, for only if people can volunteer and render assitance to victims of this circumstance in any way they to make sure they get justice. This frequent Brutality of innocent citizen by uniform men or even their politicians accolides will be a thing of past |

The update on the issue. A former naval chief and ex-Minister of Transport, Admiral Festus Porbeni (retd.), has apologised to a man that was brutalised by some naval ratings guarding his house in Port Harcourt. The victim, Mr. Takena Lawson, was beaten up by the ratings for allegedly parking his car in front of Porbeni’s house. Lawson had threatened to go to court if the former naval chief and the Navy did not apologise for the pains he suffered as a result of the assault by the ratings. But in a statement by the Media Consultant to the Admiralty Group of Companies, Mr. Sopiriye Jaja, and sent exclusively to SATURDAY PUNCH on Friday, Porbeni expressed regret over any embarrassment and bodily harm the incident might have caused Lawson. The statement reads, “We apologise for any embarrassment that may have occurred in front of retired (Admiral Festus) Porbeni’s GRA resident in Port Harcourt involving Mr. (Tekena) Lawson and his (Porbeni’s) security detail. “As an elder statesman in Nigeria, the admiral apologises for the bodily harm and embarrassment Mr. Lawson may have suffered. The admiral has since sent his representatives to Mr. Lawson and both parties have reconciled their differences. “We thank Mr. Lawson for his understanding and we are glad to have started a new friendship that may be beneficial to both parties.” Responding, Lawson maintained that he was not out to gain anything from the Navy. He insisted that he only wanted the security agents to bear in mind that their first function was to protect the lives of Nigerians. He explained that he was satisfied with the apology and would no longer press for any redress in the court. He noted that his experience in the hands of the security agents would not force him to leave the country, saying that his actions so far in the matter were only to forestall a repeat of such ugly incidents. |

Let Nigerian security outfits be aware that there formemost occupation is to protect the security & rights of citizens. Not to intimidate & brutalize. I wish Porbeni & Lawson well. Viva Nigeria! Posted by: Oyedele Babayaro , on Saturday, November 06, 2010 Report this comment # Thank you Admiral Porbeni. You have shown the true statemanship in you and it is well appreciated. The overzealous goons acting out their brutality under the cover of your name should also be seriously reprimanded and sanctioned for their bestial acts. To Tekena, you’ve exhibited the gentleman in you by accepting the apology tendered and allowing all to be laid to rest. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria! Thanx once again thanx mr. Porbeni for showing this exemplary human quality. Posted by: David D , on Saturday, November 06, 2010 The admiral picture:

Hmm. I don't get the “As an elder statesman in Nigeria" bit. Did the brasshat's minions have to devalue his so-called apology with this declaration? What has being an "elder statesman" got to do with anything? I am willing to bet that if Mr. Tekena hadn't threatened to raise hell, this 'apology' would not have been made. Nigerian soldiers/airmen/naval ratings continue to show time after time that they are men without an appreciation of the military code of honour. A waste of time and space and a total disgrace to their uniforms. But none of this should surprise any of us. Right here on this thread, some supposedly rational people have made excuses for the madness of the ratings in this whole mess. And as long as such people exist, this nonsense will continue. A country gets the kind of military it deserves. |
