FG Targets 85% Revenue By 2023 by Mrakeli: 2:08am On Aug 28, 2019
The Federal Government is targeting revenue benchmark of 85 per cent in 2023 compared to 55 per cent realised last year, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, has said.

The minister made this declaration at her maiden meeting with the minister of state budget and national planning, heads of parastatals and management staff of the ministry in Abuja, yesterday.

Ahmed stated that the Economic Recovery Growth Plan (ERGP) developed by the ministry, ushered the country out of recession and launched the country on the path of economic recovery.

She praised the implementation of the ERGP, describing it as “exemplary” and an amalgamation of the Vision 2020, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and sectoral plans.

Ahmed said: “We have to start a new long term plan as both the ERGP and Vision 2020 would soon end in 2020. The Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) is expected to be forwarded to the National Assembly in the next two weeks and the budget by the end of September.”

Speaking earlier, the Minister of State, Clem Agba, reiterated the need for team work and pledged the commitment and support of the staff in delivering the mandate of the ministry.

Agba underscored the need to strengthen monitoring and evaluation, stating that the ministry would soon commence the process of developing a long term strategic plan for the country.

In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Ernest Umakhihe lauded the contributions of the minister on the success of the ERGP and commended Mr. President for merging the two ministries, describing it as a welcome development.

It's not mandatory to brown nose. The ERGP has been a failure. Most of the stated goals haven't even been achieved.

The ERGP projected strong GDP growth rate of 4.5% in 2019, a report released this week by NBS shows the economy grew by 2.01% in the first quarter of the year
The ERGP’s bold forecasts are not limited to economic growth as it had also projected Nigeria’s unemployment rate will drop to 12.9% this year. That’s a tall order given, as of the third quarter of 2018, the unemployment rate was nearly double of that figure.

I'll defer to omohayek on this since he callled it.

It failed because the plan was badly thought out from start. It relied on import substitution and oil price recovery. The government banned certain items making business more expensive to do.

I would also blame monetary policy since inflation and interest rates are high. Not much business can do when money being lent at double digits. I believe the naira overvalued and would be better off floated.
