Our teachers cannot misinform us and we go with a lie. The Medical laboratory is a huge family! There are house-keeping staff, lab scientists, administrative staff, engineering, doctors, technologists, nurses and others that work in the Laboratory. I don't see why the lab scientist want to push the doctors out...what if the technologists wake up and decide to push the scientists out day....

What this will lead to is that other nations of the world will just quietly avoid having anything to do with our health and educational systems.... You know what that mean.... I know they don't.

This is far from what happend in UCTH today. The doctors came into the lab and chased the lab scientists away. Most lab scientist were beaten. I can relate sha...... I did my internship there.... those doctors would not mind their own task..... they always want to do everything..... they want to do the work of other allied medical professionals.....and you will wonder if them heading the medical field as cmd is not enough for them.... .. it's good to put them where they belong.....

The truth is dat the doctor is the head of the health team, its part of the WHO guideline for patient management which is obtainable in every part of the world. This news is totally false, I am an eye witness to what happened there at the lab today and doctors could actually belittle themselves to vandalise their own office in the lab and injure students who were protesting peacefully only to blame it on the students to feed their own ego, this has gone on for too long, Doctors please we need more neurosurgeons and very good doctors in Nigeria, we no longer want to run and diagnose disease in Nigeria only to go treat them outside the country because our doctors are now scared of working with their job descriptions instead they do the jobs of the nurses, radiologists and now they want to do that of themedical laboratory scientists, pls stick to your job descriptions only then would you be able to actually save lives and excel.

Everyone knows their job now. Will a lab scientist be prescribing drugs? No.
Will a Dr be reading plates on d bench? Probably but ma scientist work.

It appears it's not actually about division of labour but politics.

Although doctors do often find themselves necessarily doing the job of other healthcare professionals. Including filling out a prescription. Alongside pharmacists, doctors, dentists, nurse prescribers and others can be independent prescribers if trained to do so. At least in the West and nobody feels threatened by it.

In the 9ja environment, gra-gra, ego and inability to pursue consensus negatively impacts on all aspects of life. The healthcare setting is just another sector affected by it.

A resident Doctor attacked a med lab student IN THE LAB,breaking her feet and inflicting minor injuries on her. Why? Because she went in the grab her bag. Please do get your facts straight.
Students only retaliated when fellow med surg students became VERY violent.

Pathology is a distinct and different field from medical laboratory science. Why not focus on your field and try to head yourselves in pathology? Why try to annex Medical laboratory science by trying to assume headship, when it is a very distinct and different field from pathology? Mean while Medical laboratory science has produced numerous professors, doctors(PhD), specialists etc.
A national industrial court has even ruled in this matter that the two professions are distinct hence professionals in those fields should head themselves without overlapping but yet a medical doctor will claim he knows the field of medical laboratory science more than the medical laboratory scientist themselves who have numerous professors, doctors(PhD) and specialist, and have spent many years studying and carrying out research in this field? That you know how to use hammer and nail doesn't make you more knowledgeable than a train carpenter. I am a Medical Scientist and a M.Sc holder in this reputable field of Medical Laboratory Science with a PhD in close view. So I am very much qualified to dissect the issues herein.

This protracted issue have gone on for long and I blame the Ministry of health and toothless Judiciary. I will tell you why.

Five years ago, the National Industrial court made it explicitly clear that Medical Laboratory Scientists are independent professionals and are not an appendage of any other group of professionals as obtainable in advanced climes. The learned and wise Judges relied on the Parliamentary Acts that set up the MLSCN and MDCN as authorities before coming to this conclusion. Many other cases and judgements have been obtained against Physicians by the Scientists.

Unfortunately, the physicians (especially the MOH and CMDs) with their contempt for due process believe the judiciary is useless and toothless and have blatantly refused to obey the rules of law, the same rule of law that ensured the existence of Hospitals, medical schools, CONMESS salaries. They cherry-pick what law to obey and not obey. Physicians lose their licenses and go to jail for offenses even considered lesser than contempt of court in every respected country, why should Nigeria's situation be different?

Until some errant physicians and CMDs are committed to prison for not respecting court orders, the health care system of the country will remain a joke!

Medical Scientists in Aussie, Ireland, UK, USA are independent professionals in their own rights. In the USA the ASCP is run by both the Scientists and Pathologists, with both equally represented on the Board of Governors membership of the body.
It is an anomaly that a physician or pathologist who is not trained on Quality control rushes into a medical laboratory and hijacks the process of generation of results. In every 2-5 star WHO accreditated medical laboratory, Medical Laboratory Scientists are the Quality Control officers, no result goes out without the process of quality protocols.

Another issue incriminated in this friction is joblessness. Many federal hospitals are filled with physicians who are so bored, jobless and/or tired of the jobs. There are more physicians than Scientists in Nigeria according to records from MDCN and MLSCN, so job security is seriously becoming a problem, so in order to remain relevant, the temptation to encroach on other profession not within their purview becomes existential. Even the former ministers of health and labour who are both physicians, Issac Adewole and Chris Ngige testified that there are too many jobless physicians in Nigeria.

Finally, the verdicts of the courts must be obeyed if peace must reign. If just one CMD is committed to prison for contempt of court, others will take correction and do the right thing. The worst case scenario is for federal physicians to go on strike, when they do, they should be sacked and other jobless or unattached physicians employed. Fashola did same as Governor, heavens did not fall.

I am also an advocate that the Judiciary should have it's own armed 'police' and 'enforcers' of court judgements. The FBI and police is under the Department of justice (DOJ) in the USA not the executive ministry of interior as we have in Nigeria.
