Xenophobic Attacks: MTN Investors Lose N40bn by dre11(m): 9:13am On Sep 06, 2019
Investors of MTN Nigeria Plc. have lost about N40 billion in two days over xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Investigation by New Telegraph showed that MTN shares, which opened at N140 per share and N2.849 trillion in market capitalisation at the beginning of trading on Wednesday lost about N30 billion or N1.07 per share to close at N138.50 per share and N2.819 trillion in market capitlisation at the close of the market the previous day.

The telecom firm also shed N10 billion or 45 kobo per share at the close of trading yesterday to close at N138.05 per share from N2.819 trillion in capitalization to N2.809 trillion, bringing a cumulative loss to N40 billion.

There have been attacks and demonstrations at MTN offices to protest xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa.

MTN Nigeria had, on Wednesday, confirmed attacks on its offices, saying that all MTN stores and service centres would be closed until further notice.

The company stated this in a letter sent to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) by its Company Secretary, Uto Ukpanah.

Ukpanah, in the letter, confirmed that over the last day, “our facilities, customers and some of our stakeholders have been the subject of attacks in retaliation for the ongoing xenophobia situation in South Africa.”

He said that the company had confirmed reports of attacks in Lagos, Ibadan and Uyo.

“While we remain committed to providing uninterrupted services, the safety and security of our customers, members of staff and partners is our primary concern.

“All MTN stores and service centres will, therefore, be closed as a precaution, until further notice,” Ukpanah stated.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman, Progressive Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Mr. Boniface Okezie, said the market reacted negatively to the shares of the telecom company after the shut down of their shops nationwide following xenophobic attacks.

“Since they shut down the shops, the market has to react. MTN should talk to their home country to stop these attacks on foreigners. If this provocation continues, the company will not have enabling environment to operate. If it continues, we will nationalize South African companies in Nigeria.

“We need to take the bull by the horn, but unfortunately, we have a weak government; Obasanjo’s regime wouldn’t have tolerated this rubbish. And because our economy is still crawling, our people will continue to run away to other countries. The Federal Government should reposition the economy to encourage Nigerians to stay in this country,” he said.

Also, Shehu Mikail, National President, Constance Shareholders Association of Nigeria, said that MTN, the continent’s largest mobile phone operator, fell after the company closed its offices in Nigeria following attacks on its premises in three cities.

“It was due to panic that made investors to embark on sell pressure, the situation is not good for investment in Nigeria. My advice is that both the government of South Africa and that of Nigeria should take proactive action to stop these attacks to enable an inflow of investment in both countries,” he said.

NSE recently admitted 20.354 billion units of shares of MTN Nigeria Plc. at N90.00 per share on the premium board of the daily official list of the Exchange.

Addressing investment community on the floor of the Exchange, the Chief Executive Officer, Fredi Moolman, listed the rationale for listing to include creating access for the public to participate in the ownership of MTN Nigeria, contributing to the growth of the Nigerian Stock Exchange and to further establish brand leadership and legacy by becoming the first mobile network operator to list on the NSE.

He noted that MTN Nigeria is the largest mobile operator in Nigeria with 60.3 million subscribers and 20.4 million active data.

He added that with 50 per cent market share by revenue, MTN has the largest fiber network coverage of 25,800km.

If care is not taken , this may just be the beginning of losses for mtn investors .

Nigeria will lose yes, but mtn will lose most . It will be better for mtn to speak to its home country to provide enabling enviroment for other nationals in South Africa for business and security purposes.

The whole of MTN worldwide is not worth $40billion.

MTN is a going to be a thing of history in years to come, Airtel is far ahead of them in everything.

So unfortunate. This year's attack should send a warning signal to those lunatics tarnishing the image of South Africa. Imagine a black man hating his fellow black man.

A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE!

This is South Africa where xenophobic attack on Nigerians and other African countries have hit a record high in 2019. Sometime two years ago, the Zulu king called on foreigners to leave South Africa. Since that time, the xenophobic attack has increased rapidly, graduating to burning of Nigerians on the streets.

They chased Nigerians away and killed the ones they captured, they loot and burned their shops. The Unions in SA always say they are monitoring the situation. The president of the country Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa treats the situation with kids gloves.

But let me tell you this, the South Africans will definitely pay dearly for their devilish act unless they stop the xenophobic attack on their fellow Africans who once cried for the pain caused on them but now crying of the pains caused by them, it's just a matter of time because when they are done dealing with the innocent people in their land, they will start dealing with themselves, by then they won't have anyone to turn to and the fire they made will consume them.

If Nigerians can retaliate to this South African treatment what's holding us back from facing our real fight which Is with our government who doesn't value the lives of her citizen this is the most populated country in Africa and we're held under slavery by the government made up of how many people? that's where our fight is this isn't different from the killings that has been going on in Nigeria by different security agencies in Nigeria why didn't anyone burn down any police station,no difference with nepa not giving us light no one burnt down any of their offices,or citizens been arrested unnecessarily just for expressing their view, our fight is here in the west in Nigeria not in the south. when a father takes his children for slave his brothers will do worst or the same when he's not around.

I condemned in totality the xenophobic attack in South Africa on their fellow Africans and urge the relevant authorities to wade in, before it spreads to other African countries. A stitch in time saves nine

Nigeria will not lose.
Nigerians will lose and then you start blaming the government and "our leaders" for unemployment.
Every action has consequence.
That is why I am happy that about 83 criminals were arrested for looting, that will
send a strong message to others.

You don't have to imagine anything.

You don't see anything wrong when the citizens of the same country hate on one
another but you don't want blacks to hate blacks.

Assuming I was trader I would have placed a put option at the opening price or start shorting mtn shares. I saw this coming.

Trading too sweet abeg. If control big funds you can even incite Nigerians further against mtn using news and blogs and make cool millions.

If you control bigger funds you can even incite South Africans to behave more like animals using the press which will incite Nigerian further to burn mtn outlets. Their shares will fall like olosho pant falls when money dey hand.

You short you place put options you make billions

You can even bribe NSE official to make sure trading on mtn shares isn't put on hold. You don blow b DAT.

Trading sweet die .

Dats how the power brokers of this world do.

So don't quote to say rubbish abeg. I am just imagination oh.

Good for them. We have the weakest government in the World.

If not that Glo isn't really serious as they're all about celebrity endorsements instead of providing quality service (data service especially), we wouldn't be running to MTN, Airtel and 9mobile. Glo can give you enough bonus data but to use am na WAEC

Why won't they loose, imagine a big subscriber like me stop using MTN for data and others likewise follow suit where will money come out from. I ve started using Airtel already and even though they zap data but at least it's a blow against the other side.

MTN's saving grace is their large coverage whereas Airtel is still location selective. MTN is truly everywhere you go and Nigerians trust them for that.
