Two students of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State (FUOYE), have been feared shot dead by the police during a peaceful protest over poor power supply in the community.

In return, the irate student allegedly beat a policeman to death and set the office of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company and a police van ablaze.

Today’s protest is coming after a similar action four months ago. The visibly-angry students carried placards with inscriptions such as “Say No to NEPAPHOBIA”; “We need light” chanting “we need light” in songs.

One of the protesters, Okedare Gbenga, a 300-level student of Geology department lamented how students pay for light but they don’t enjoy it.

Another protester, Adekola Ayomide Franchis, a 300-level student of Accounting department and President of the Faculty of Management Sciences, lamented the poor power supply.

Former Vice-Chairman National Association of Nigerian Students, Ekiti State, Comrade Taiwo while addressing the students declared the protest opened, threatening it will be sustained until government addressed the situation.

Speaking at the school gate while addressing the students, The President of the Students Union Government, Oluwaseun Awodola, lamented poor power supply that has led to the insecurity of the students

protest turned bloody. but nigerian police is a disgrace to humanity.why must they provoke and kill peaceful protesters everytime?are there no global standard for police to disperse protesters?must it be with teargas and live bullets? I just tire for nigerian police.

I can tell you categorically the student were the one at fault the police did everything orderly for the first time I would support the police when the protest started the police was even supporting the student and give them adequate security but some of the bad element within the student make the matter worst and start looting and use the avenue to damage government property the federal road was block for over six hours.peopele traveling from one place to another couldn’t and Dey make ordinary citizens to suffer for it the student start the bizarre attitude first and against what the op said it wasn’t a peaceful protest it was hell peace

shooting at an unarmed protester just because they are demanding for their right? what happened to the use of water canon, rubber bullets and pellets, Shields and mounted horses used in the developed world to control irate and grumbling protesters.



I think it's high time the IG and the police commission looks into the creation of a special force trained mainly to control protest across the country. We all can't be mad at the same time na.

The way Nigerian police handles issues is really a reflection of the poor training and vetting they undergo, must of them are mentally unstable, how do kill people protesting poor power supply and justify doing that?

It's because they have not met a proper law suit, Hong Kong citizens have been protesting for over 13 weeks and you not a single soul had been lost so far.

No application of riot police in Nigeria, some country's police force have very efficient ways of dealing with a crowd that would make you think twice before coming out to protest with out killing the protester, by the time one of their dogs bite you, or they launch hot water cannons, or balls bullets that sting but wouldn't kill u, a typical Nigerian would think twice before protesting if you use hot water cannon or dogs on them


But that's not applicable with our trigger happy cops

In as much as some of this students can go extreme...The police should be able to mediate peacefully in protest like this....How difficult can it be for a policeman to try talk to the student in a friendly manner on how the issue can be resolved in which i am so sure will calm any tensions and make the student reciprocate the same way but No, they go wayward and start talking with their guns.......Sometimes i just wonder the kind of police course and training they go for and what they learn during their training process..

Such a terrible scenario. Did their parents send them to school to turn themselves activists and start protesting up and down? Your primary assignment in school is to study not going about shouting aluta. I just pity the parents of these students, bearing in mind the stress parents going through in this harsh economic condition to get school fees.

I wonder why they just shoot anybody anyhow these days. Before they shoot in the air to disperse people but now they shoot directly. I wonder the kind of instructions they get from their boss on daily basis. I hope it wont get to a time when the masses would rather kill the one that is supposed to protect them rather the one being protected from.
Imagine the foolish DPO saying that no life was lost in the protest.
