Almost all modern vehicles with internal combustion engines are equipped with fuel pumps. The fuel pump is responsible for delivering fuel from the gas tank to the engine at the pressure required to meet the performance requirements. When you turn on the key, the fuel pump is activated and under pressure, which is heard in some cars as a quiet whine or hum. The fuel pumps of most modern
vehicles are electric and mounted in the fuel tank.
Typically, a defective fuel pump will result in one or more of the following 7 symptoms:

1.
Grouchy noise from the fuel tank

One of the first signs of a problem with the fuel pump is a loud whining. An old or worn fuel pump can cause a noticeably loud moaning or howling while running. Most fuel pumps produce a low hum during normal operation. However, overly loud whine from the fuel tank is usually a sign of a problem.

2.
Difficulty starting

Another symptom often associated with a problematic fuel pump is startup problems. Since fuel pumps are constantly running when the ignition is switched on, they can wear off and weaken over time. A weak fuel pump may still be pumping fuel but the vehicle may be in difficulty due to the lack of pressure. In more severe cases, the vehicle may even require several turns of the key before it starts.

3.
Engine sputtering

One of the safest indicators of a faulty fuel pump is a sputtering engine - typically at high speeds. If you drive at a consistently high speed and the engine suddenly stutters before returning to normal operation, this may indicate problems with the fuel pump. In this case, the fuel pump can not supply the engine with a constant fuel flow at the ideal pressure.

4.
Stalling at high temperatures

The stalling can occur due to several problems within a vehicle. However, be aware of this when it often occurs at high temperatures, which are displayed on the thermometer of the vehicle. An increasing temperature associated with stalling often indicates a problem with the fuel pump motor. If stalling continues to occur with increasing temperature reading, it may indicate a deterioration of the fuel pump and requires replacement.

5.
Power loss under stress

Another indication of a poor fuel pump is a loss of power when the vehicle is under tension (eg, driving uphill or carrying a heavy load) or accelerating. The engine shuts off because depleting parts of the fuel pump in these situations can not keep up with the increased fuel requirements of the vehicle. Under these circumstances, the car feels that it is unable to maintain its intended performance. If the fuel pump is the cause, it can no longer accurately control the fuel pressure and supply the appropriate amount of fuel to the engine.

6.
Car Surging

An irregular resistance inside the fuel pump motor can lead to an increase of the vehicle and indicates a fuel pump in need of repair. Surging feels as if the gas pedal has been used. However, it occurs at random, consistent speed. If this happens frequently, this can be due to problems in the fuel pump.

7.
Decreased Gas mileage

If you think your car is refueling more often than usual, this may be due to a problem with the fuel pump. A valve in the fuel pump may not open, causing more fuel to flow into the engine system than required.

LAST WORDS

As a vital part of the internal combustion engine system, the fuel pump is something that all drivers need to keep in mind. If your car is experiencing any of the signs above, have the vehicle inspected by a specialist to determine if the pump should be replaced.
