"Never hurt a man's ego."

"The male ego is the most fragile thing ... ."

"Never belittle a man, insult him, or make him feel less of a man . . ."

"Be submissive, not seek to be domineering and flaunting your achievements, wealth . . . ."

"Never raise your voice/hand back at/on him."

" 'Cover him up, and don't expose his weaknesses, to men, people.' "

"Learn to understand his mood, what ticks him off and try to avoid doing them."

"Men are like babies, wants to be pampered and learning to tend to their ego, nurturing it is key to unlocking their best selves."

"A man wants to be in the lead, be first, provide, and do all for a woman."

"Something in him seeks to do, to be needed, and not be led . . ."

So many things has been said it, described and told to women to heed, take note of. An undefined, complex, and obscure thing that everybody refers to and pass comment about.

What is it exactly?

Is it (something) in a man? And how does it affect his behavior, in every area of his life? Or It's just a general thing, common to males and females, but the male's has been misrepresented? Changed into what it is not?

Is it psychological, an entirely different 'make' of ego compared to a female's, or it is exclusive to men alone?

If there's something like that, could it be because of culture (societal expectations and gender roles), resulting in a particular mentality: one of taking up responsibilities, desiring to lead, being compelled to sacrifice, etc, for a woman?

What do you think of it?
What do you understand about it?
What's the male ego?
. I will explain this to you, brb

The male ego is driven by recognition, attention, and action. Men are assumed to be more active beings who do important things (such as political leaders, soldiers, scientists, etc.) and who are deserving of attention by others. In this vision of the male ego, men are driven by their physical strength, sex drive, and evolutionary biology as competitors for female attention to be competitive, to strive for greatness and power, and to avoid showing any emotion and weakness. For example, in most Nigeria communities, the male gender role is typically understood and described in active as opposed to passive terms. Men are courageous, strong, competitive, independent, and stable (in contrast, women are passive, emotional, weak, and more socially-oriented). To give another example, men in many communities in Nigeria are expected to avoid showing emotion. Remember the old saying "boys don't cry?" Instead, men are supposed to be macho and strong in the face of personal challenges, such as loss, grief, and sadness

This is interesting and enlightening...

Thank you for sharing.

A man must eat beans and pounded yam every Thursday and this enlightens his ego. Ensure that men eat beans mama okiafor. Beans is good for mens ego but hot beans with garden egg and amala with gbegiri.

Both men and women have egos (feeling of self worth, importance etc)

Thing is its wired differently.

Men have that domineering thing in them--- both towards themselves let alone the opposite gender. They are natural dominators of their environment.

Women have the "focus" thing-- attention craze, you must notice me syndrome. Though many may have ability to control their environment, they would easily sell it, as long as the environment gives them relative attention and comfort.

Notice a home with boys. It's always fights. They would want to prove they are (mostly) stronger and more brave than their peers. Unlike the females, such is minimal (with the exception of minimal cases). Women will do very nice things at home and will almost automatically be parents favorite (domestically). But let daddy and mummy not recognize the effort or give the praise to another, jealousy and other wrong traits will rise.

In all, if managed properly, ego has the ability to bring the best in people.

In my opinion, "the male ego" determines the degree of power a man perceives and believes himself to possess. If he has a strong ego--he sees himself as strong and powerful. Conversely, if he has a weak ego, he sees himself as weak and powerless.

I have learned that there are Five Basic Needs all males must have continuously "reinforced" in order to feel powerful:

1) the need to be recognized as a special person.
2) the need to "travel light" without feeling a loss of personal freedom.
3) the need for loyalty from others.
4) the need to be close emotionally with satisfying sexual unions.
5) the need to work successfully-- since the male's personal identity is directly tied to the occupation he chooses for himself.

I learned about these basic needs through long years of reading, observation, education, experience, trial and error. And I've noticed many examples of widely spread social problems resulting from weak male egos.

I was enlightened by a very astute and honest male friend who told me during an internet chat one evening that all men measure themselves through the eyes, smiles, and words of the women they know and/or love. He said, "We are what you believe us to be. Men are made by women."

And, interestingly, after learning these simple truths about the male ego's basic needs, it occurred to me that I had these same needs, too. I discovered that "the ego" is gender neutral and directly attributed to one's self-image as a strong or weak person. Males and females are different in many ways biologically--but the same in mind and soul. That old cliché, "What's good for the gander is good for the goose" is very true, in my 66 years of human experience.

all husband are men first. for any society to survive the harshness of the world it had to treat men as expendable, it has to be ready to sacrifice the lives of men to protect and provide for women and children. All men are expendable, it is a harsh truth but it's the truth. You will understand this during war or when you want to board emergency live boat

So it all comes down to how they've been raised and taught?

No ma'am. Although I suspect this is your own conclusion. However, the fact is that the male ego is a natural instinct. Just as a male lion that conquers another male lion tries to assert its dominance by killing off the conquered male's offspring, to put the females on heat. It's a natural order that is not based on how the lions were nurtured. Countless examples abound in the higher animal kingdom where the male species need to put in some sort of competitive performance to win over female mates. It's all natural.

It's no different in humans. The fact that males naturally have a higher level of testosterone makes them genetically wired to be physically stronger, more confident, more adventurous, than their female counterparts. It's these attributes that have helped shape the progression of the world for thousand of years through wars, inventions, expeditions, etc. By being naturally stronger and domineering, it's only natural that men would be in charge of the decision making processes in most societies, giving them that upper hand in representation at the global stage.

Of course, this also comes into play when relating with females. Men are generally fiercely competitive when trying to woo a woman, and would try to employ the very best methods that would demonstrate their manhood to win a lady. Females too overtime have come to reward men (accepting proposals) that exhibit the very best traits of manliness which spur men to aspire to attain higher levels of male supremacy.

In summary, the essence of the male ego is firstly natural, consequently it becomes evident, and then finally becomes cemented through societal values.

Unlike a woman who simply is, a man must become. And every man thinks of himself as the perfect embodiment of the term "man". It's what makes him wake up and ready to slay dragons. It is his primary source of motivation.

"The male ego" is simply the intrinsic need to feel like kings (even if he's not) and hurting a man's ego is simply reminding him that he is no king (that they're greater men) and denying him recognition for his achievements in turn starving him of the highest validation he needs.

If he can't be recognised for being "THE MAN". Then he is no man at all.

for humanity to survive in a naturally hostile earth, every society needed to be ready to sacrifice the lives of its men to protect and provide for
women and children. There is necessarily no reason for a man to want to do that so men were bribed and deceived with things like statue, glory, heroes(by dying in a war), status and bravery. Men started measuring their worth with these bribes which served as a source of self esteem derived from making yourself disposable and believing it's for the good of humanity. Without the male ego we'll all still be living in jungles

You captured the topic philosophically. You just summarized a man's ego in the most basic way. Most men have to suppress their ego to fit into lots of positions else it would be war everywhere. The animal kingdom clearly exposes the male ego in full display and surprisingly balances the ecosystem but humans have had to create laws to put lots of men in check. While might is right still rules in the animal kingdom, it doesn't in the human kingdom. Rather, natural selection in the human kingdom has seen other survival instincts at play. This is where politics and intelligence come in to galvanize the law suppressed ego of men. The more a man is politically inclined; the more intelligent he is, the more likely he maximizes his ego.

As emotions are to women, what territorial behavior is to wolves, what protective behavior is to a German Shepherd dog, as herding behavior is to a border collie, such is ego to a man.

It can be used for good, or for evil. It can drive achievement, it can also drive envy and wickedness.

It can inspire commitment and responsibility, it can also inspire controlling behavior and abuse.

Makes sense, your view.

The male ego is pride, end of story. There is nothing magical about it. Women are told to stay cautious and protect their man’s ego because in a serious relationship a man is actually the chooser not the woman. As such do not get on his bad side because he can easily reject you. Every action you take registers in his mind as a reward vs cost balance. If the costs of keeping you outweigh the rewards he’ll cut you off without a second thought.

From experience even the most rude of females enters into a relationship being humble. They instinctively know keeping a man happy/content keeps her around longer. A female uninterested in a man or inexperienced in relationships crushes a man’s ego without a care. However on meeting a man she desires adjusts her character to suit him.

Phew! This is .........

@bolded .... the evolutionary psychology preachers will disagree with you though lol.
This doesn't sit well with me as it's about giving or not giving favors, patronizing attitude.

So many exceptions to your view, and it contains wrong assertions.

There are really people who get married because they want to and like each other (behaviors and everything else inclusive).

You explained this well.

I have some questions to ask: Do women have it, too?

Is it important in the twenty-first century, and in the coming ones, considering how fast the world is advancing—technologically, socially, economically, medically (so many things are being changed from the natural ways we were used to, like in childbirth, operations to change organs in the body, etc)?

How about effeminate/gay men? This ego doesn't seem to apply to them.
