The onus is on vanguard to verify news before publishing as vast majority of people see whatever comes from them as genuine, otherwise, they are culpable and liable yo charge with libel and defamation of character. Let's all be guided accordingly.

The HEAT generated from the tons of fake news items, jaundiced articles, mischievous interviews and pretentious prophesies that came up in the last 7 days or so against the person of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is enough to melt the hardest of steel.

How Osinbajo has managed to stay calm, sane and dignified in going about his official duties is a pointer to the fact that he is trully a man of God.

Well said.

The story was credited to Timi Frank who has not denied it and the newspaper has every right to publish the statement and assertion of anyone without facts.

There's no law that says newspapers, bloggers and radio should publish what anyone says with facts as long as the person is quoted.

Asibanjo is a disgrace to lawyers, an embarrassment to Christian. A short devilish dwarf.

In saner climbs, he will give a press conference with the facts and auditing of FIRS accounts not trying to intimidate the newspaper with court case.

the VP is a lawyer, a pastor and a Christian. He knows the law better than you or me.

Now here's the crux, vanguard didn't report or publish that the v.president did anything.

Vanguard published that Timi Frank said the VP did this. Nothing in law is wrong with that. If Timi Frank denies vanguard and vanguard doesn't have proof of that, then vanguard is on trouble. Vanguard only needs to make sure that they have hard evidence that Timi Frank gave the information.

Funny how you lebel me Igbo and VP hater. You're an ignorant, presumptuous fool.

The Nigerian news media are extremely lazy, unprofessional and basically worthless, they don't report worthy news stories or even go out to source credible news events, they just sit and monitor the social media and blogs for rumors, and gossips to publish. They don't investigate or do investigative journalism, they just peddle rumors and gossips every day like trashy tabloids.

Just imagine, their standard news sources are bloggers, Reno Omokri, FFK, Frank and other lying and unsavory characters.

Reputable news media shouldn't be publishing unverified and unsubstantiated claims which they do every day because they don't get sued or punished.

Mr. Eze Anaba,
The Editor,
Vanguard Newspaper,
Apapa, Lagos.

Re: N90 bn FIRS election fund, Osinbajo's problem, not 2023 politics-Frank

We are solicitors to Professor Yemi Osinbanjo SAN, the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (hereinafter referred to as “our client”) on whose behalf and instructions we write this letter.

Our client’s attention has been drawn to your highly libelous story entitled “N90 bn FIRS election fund, Osinbanjo’s problem, not 2023 politics-Frank” recklessly published in the Vanguard newspaper edition of September 23, 2019.

In the story credited to one Comrade Timi Frank, your newspaper informed your large readership that our client’s travail “has nothing to do with 2023 but alleged mismanagement of about N90 Billion Naira (sic) released by the Federal Inland Revenue Inland Service (FIRS) to prosecute the last general elections in favour of the APC”.

The false contextual background and specific untrue and defamatory statement include the following:

"The presidency discovered how Osinbajo allegedly mismanaged N90billion from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

When confronted by the presidency, he confirmed to General Buhari that he indeed allegedly took N90billion from FIRS but it was used for the 2019 presidential election campaign in strategic states of the South-west.

Gen Buhari asked for a breakdown of how the money was spent and he said he gave N11 billion to Lagos state APC leader but when the said national leader and one former APC chairman were invited for an explanation, it was confirmed that Osinbajo gave only N5billion and not N11billion to Lagos state.

'The cabal is asking to know how come they beat PDP in the South-west with less than 60,000 votes if the money was actually spent in the strategic states of the South-west as allegedly claimed.'

The activist insisted that if the information is true, Osinbajo must resign his position as Vice President, adding that such is akin to the characteristics of ‘yahoo boys."

It is clear that the entire publication was a vicious, wicked and reckless ploy to impugn the reputation of our client and lower him in the estimation of right thinking members of the public. Without any scintilla of evidence you deliberately gave the dubious impression that our client colluded with the Federal Inland Revenue Service to divert public funds to the tune of N90 billion to prosecute the 2019 general elections in the South west region.

In view of the foregoing we have our client’s firm instructions to request for the immediate retraction of the offensive and derogatory publication coupled with apology prominently published in your newspaper.

Take notice that if we do not receive your formal retraction and apology within 24 hours of the receipt of this letter, we shall proceed with our client’s instructions to seek legal remedies including aggravated damages in the appropriate High Court.

Yours Sincerely,

FEMI FALANA, SAN

In the Vanguard on-line of Thursday edition of May 4, 2017 we published a news item, titled ‘illegal oil deals: Clear yourself of corruption allegations, Group tells Sahara Energy Group

In which some unpleasant statements and insinuations were made concerning the person of Sahara Energy Group. We have since discovered the said report to be false and hereby retract the publication. We apologize to Sahara Energy Group and its management and regret the inconvenience the said publication may have caused. Once again accept our apology. Editor

You are wrong, they've retracted and apologized for sourcing fake and unverified rubbish from groups and lying characters like this frank person.

This is how they publish uninvestigated and unverified stories and later apologize and retract their own failure and rubbish.

On January 12, 2017 edition of Vanguard Online , we published a story on Bishop David O. Oyedepo of Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners’ Chapel purportedly invoking God’s curses on those fuelling Southern Kaduna killings.

We have since discovered that Bishop David O. Oyedepo did make the comment in a video made in 2015 which has nothing to do with the current happening in Kaduna State.

We hereby retract the story and sincerely apologise to Bishop David O. Oyedepo, ministers and congregants of the Living Faith Church Worldwide . We hold Bishop David O. Oyedepo and his church in high esteem and once again, accept our apologies

Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/01/retraction/

Another unverified story and retraction. Just imagine, what about doing basic journalism work by calling the church for verification and authentification? No, they just sit on social media and copy/paste all sorts of fake rubbish everyday.

They do this every day because they don't get sued or pay damages.

Lazy youth. That's why Osinbajo has decided to take the case up to the court. Timi definitely will be a party in the case eventually if vanguard does not retract the news

Very Lazy Youth!

1. Vanguard published it, so it must be the first to be called to answer.
2. Vanguard either retracts or let the case go to court. In court Vanguard will have to tell the source. So Timi will be summoned. I hope Timi will not call some crap witness from Kenya like his oga did at PEPT
3. Or Vanguard retracts the statement, stating that they relied on false evidence given by Timi. Falana can rely on Vanguard's apology to sue Timi.

Let's see how it goes. But I think Vanguard Newspapers is just public address system used by Timi Frank to tell us what actually happened.

Also, FIRS had earlier threaten the said Frank and he frankly responded that he cannot be intimidated and even queried why FIRS instead of the Vice President who is on the eyes of the storm.

Here, the Vice President has also misfired. I guess the author, Timi Frank who happen to be an old friend, should have been the one here.

Misfired? You think Osinbajo with his legal experience will engage in a fight without strategic thinking? Have you asked yourself, how come it was only Vanguard that published such statement. Going first after Vanguard is a logical move. From Vanguard to Timi is more or less increasing the pay-back.
