Chelsea have won 28 major trophies in their 113-year history, six EPL titles, eight FA Cups, five League Cups, four FA Community Shields, one UEFA Champions League, two UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups, one UEFA Europa League and one UEFA Super Cup.

Their success throughout the years is down to the glut of legends such as Frank Lampard, Bobby Tambling, Didier Drogba and many more, who have put on the famous blue shirt. But, not every player has had the prerogative of going down as an icon in the club’s history. Some deals have turned out to be catastrophes that Chelsea would rather like to forget.

5. Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres became the most expensive player to move between two British clubs when Chelsea paid Liverpool £50m for their star striker on a dramatic deadline day in January 2011 to Chelsea.

The Spain international was a shadow of his former self at Stamford Bridge, clearly burdened by the great weight of responsibility that his vast price tag brought. He was the target of ridicule for opposition fans and the media as he suffered a dramatic decline. Goal.com

Torres however won Chelsea’s first and only Uefa Champions League, with a goal against Barcelona in the semi-finals. He eventually left the club when AC Milan made his loan move permanent in 2015 and then returned back to his former club, Atlético Madrid where he managed to revive his career.

4. Andriy Shevchenko

Much was expected from Andriy Shevchenko after the Ukrainian striker made a £39.49m move to Chelsea from AC Milan, a transfer fee that broke the then record for the highest fee paid by an English football club.

Shevchenko made his debut with the club in the Community Shield game vs Liverpool where the Ukrainian scored the only goal in his side’s 2-1 defeat to the Reds. Shevchenko struggled to acclimatize to a physical mode of play in English football and it quickly became clear that the 29-year-old was way past his supreme as he managed only 8 goals thereafter throughout his 3-year stint.

His £121,000-a-week remuneration made him the highest earner in the squad but he couldn’t even manage to get into double figures in terms of goals in his three years at the club. Shevchenko struggled to adapt to a physical style of play in English football, though, and it quickly became clear that the 29-year-old was past his best. Nine goals in 48 Premier League games saw him released 11 months early from his contract when he rejoined Dynamo Kiev for free.

3. Adrian Mutu

Adrian Mutu was by far the most controversial player signing in the history of Chelsea when he arrived from Parma for a fee of £17.10m. The Romanian had a pretty decent start at the Stamford Bridge but soon his form dipped predominantly due to lack of chances.

Gianfranco Zola left Chelsea to be succeeded by Mutu but he couldn’t reproduce the brilliance shown by his forerunner due to a breakdown in relationship with the then manager Jose Mourinho. Sportskeeda

It got worse when in September 2004 he failed a drugs test for cocaine and was subsequently released in October by the Blues. The FA gave him a seven-month ban and a £20,000 fine.

Ten years of legal proceedings followed as Chelsea sued their former player for a contravention of his contract. However, Mutu got back to his best after departing Chelsea playing for the likes of Juventus and Fiorentina where he played a total of 145 matches and banged in 61 goals.

2. Shaun Wright-Phillips

Shaun Wright-Phillips, arguably England’s most promising player at the time, joined Chelsea in 2005 for £21m. His move from Manchester City to London proved to be a risk and he was inconsistent in his first season, earning only 15 starts in an already strong Chelsea side.

He ended up missing out on the 2006 World Cup in Germany and he ultimately rejoined Manchester City for a fee thought to be around £8.5m. He made 125 appearances for Chelsea but almost half of them were from the bench in what ended as an expensive mistake.

1. Winston Bogarde

Winston Bogarde could top any list in world football for bad signings. The Dutchman arrived on a free transfer after spells as a bit-part player at AC Milan and Barcelona but he was a colossal financial burden because of his wages.

Bogarde joined Chelsea at 29 and earned £40,000-a-week, which amounted to a huge £2m a season, and this was before Chelsea became super rich under the ownership of Abramovich.

The 6’2 defender managed only four starts during his four-year stay at the Blues in which 11 of his 12 appearances came in his first season at Stamford Bridge and became a figure of ridicule for Premier League fans. Bogarde was forced to quit the game after leaving Chelsea, as he unsurprisingly failed to find another club.

OP correct your mistakes
Chelsea won Europa cup 2 times 2013 and 2018/19
Wright Philip is not among the worst signing
