The Board of Directors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the appointment of Dr (Mrs) Kristalina Georgieva as new Managing Director of the IMF.

Dr Mrs Georgieva, whose appointment of a five-year term takes effect from Tuesday, October 1, 2019, is to also serve as Chairman of the Executive Board of the IMF for the same period.

Mrs Georgieva, who succeeds Christine Lagarde, was selected through a rigorous interview process by the 24-member Executive Board representing the IMF’s 189 member countries.

A national of Bulgaria, Georgieva has been the Chief Executive Officer of the World Bank since Jan. 2017. From Feb. 1 to April 8, 2019, she served as Interim President of the World Bank.

She has a PhD in Economic Science and a MA in Political Economy and Sociology from the University of National and World Economy in Bulgaria, where she also taught from 1977 to 1991.
