TODAY IN HISTORY 1889 September 26: The First Anniversary of the Emancipation of the Negro Slaves in Brazil was commemorated in the following manner. Thanksgiving Services were held in the Roman Catholic Church, Lagos at St. Paul’s Church Breadfruit, (C.M.S), Lagos in Yoruba and at the Wesleyan Chapel (now the Methodist) Church, Tinubu, Lagos in English.
