CHAPTER ONE

There was a sudden rush of people as the Chevron company office door was jerked open. The Director of the company, a short Yoruba man, stood by the doorpost, holding a long sheet of paper. He quickly held up his hand when he saw the impatient crowd of applicants pressing towards him.
A little patience, friends, he said in a deep voice, with an ugly frown on his face forehead. He cleared his throat and announced, as if forced to do so. All of you have been successful, except one applicant.
He paused to look at the excited crowd before continuing. "WILL CHELLY JACKSON see me in my office immediately, while the rest of you wait for your appointment letters and some advance. He glanced around quickly and slunk back into his office.
Chelly Jackson struggled through the frantic crowd and pushed the door open. Before he could close it behind him, the Director spoke.

Without looking at his colleagues, he walked away from the shade of the office building and sat down holding his head in his hands, his eyes closed.

He remained still for about ten minutes as his mind race desparetly.
Before leaving home that morning, he had made a final promise to his beloved mother, one which he felt to be unbreakable. "MY MOTHER, he had said, kneeling down before her, "You can now smile for your sorrows are over. I'm going to the Chevron company this morning to receive my appointment letter and there will be some for us to start work with.
His mother had given him a warm smile before replying. "How i wish that could happen,my son. The expression on her face that morning had betrayed prolonged silent suffering. She looked older than usual, her once beautifully shaped nose now hanging like a boneless thumb.
Her soft voice had stopped him when he was finally ready to leave. "Please, when you get the money, kindly get us some foodstuffs from the market as we have practically nothing here at home. He had nodded reassuringly.
He hastily fought back tears of hopelessness as he saw his friend, Felix, approaching. "Well, this is a matter of concern, Felix said cautiously, but in sympathy. "We'd better wait and see them about it when everything cools down.
Chelly Jackson said nothing. He knew it was only going to be a waste of time. He had realized that from the Directors attitude.
