Nigeria And Buhari's Hypocritical Politics Of Patriotism By Udeagbala C. Collin by Nobody: 3:55pm On Oct 01, 2019 |
The Federal Republic of Nigeria is bearly six decades old bedeviled with burden of challenges and inefficiencies that seems unending, although to some few section of the over 200 million population, those who the President would probably regard as "Patriotic Citizens", the country's regressive trend is as a result of the failure of the previously preceded administrations "the 16 years PDP" as it popularly refered to. While some of us won't outrightly shy away from acknowledging that previous administrations that existed prior to the inception of the current administration which began on the 27th May 2015had their own limitations or share of failure but Nigeria have never had it (governance) this bad. The rest of failure that trails the government of Muhammadu Buhari behind is uniquely unprecedented. The major campaign promises of the then general as we were cowed(ly) meant to believe that the man behind to all has shedded away his militaristic clout and have accepted and adopted democratic norms and ways, those promises we're as follows: To fight corruption which he rhetorically proclaimed to be what ends or grounds Nigeria if Nigeria doesn't kill it. To end the killing spree associated with the activities of the world most deadly terror group "Boko Haram or " ISWAP"(Islamic State West African Province) which have claimed the lives of tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children and displaced millions mostly in the North Eastern part of the country and to which he (Buhari) claimed that his predecessors failed to contain. Then the promise to move the Economy towards the pathways of growth and prosperity. Surprisingly those promises were mere exaggerations with no plan or policy in place on how to execute the phantom promises. More than six years since the government came on board, nothing seems to have tilted for the better and those rhetorical promises as general perception would have it was nothing but a sham. The Nigeria of today has overtaken India to become the poverty capital of the world and is on the verge of becoming the world capital on open defecation. Prices of basic food stuffs and services skyrocketed as inflation have been on an unprecedented rise, fueled by the implementations of the nonsensical policy of banning forex access for food importation. Indiscriminate increase in taxes instead of widening the the tax net. It's Nigeria birthday today but there's virtually nothing to celebrate. Nigerians are poorer, income inequality is persistent, the power sector is nothing to be proud of. The Nigerian judiciary and security apparatus is now a willing tool in the hands of the government used to silence opposition and critics. The government of Buhari now charges citizens for "insulting" the president, they choose which court ruling to obey. The separation of power clause in the 1999 constitution is practically non-existent. The legislature and judiciary now dances to the tune of the executive. #FreeSowore Happy Independence (Dependence) Day Nigeria!
