Italy's parliament has voted to cut the number of representatives in both houses by more than a third.

The lower house approved a law to reduce the number of MPs from 630 to 400 and senators from 315 to 200.

The reform was a manifesto promise of the populist Five Star Movement, the main party in Italy's governing coalition.

They say it will streamline parliament and save hundreds of millions of euros in salaries and expenses.

In a post on Twitter, Five Star said the bill - which was supported by almost all parties - would save the country €1bn (£897m) over 10 years

Wow! So, Italy with a population of 60 million has far more senators than the US for instance? As a matter of fact, that's about 2-3 times the size of the US senate. Depending on how you look at it. In fact, I want to believe that the Italians are over-represented.

America has just 100 senators to a population of ~300 million. Roughly, 1 senator to 3 million people.

I was greatly awed the day I found out that Nigeria- even with this population- has more senators than the all famous USA. But with what I have read right now, I am even all the more flummoxed.

I think some countries have to take a cue from the US. You don't need a bloated or over-bloated senate to function properly. What works is a manageable size and accountability to the populace after all.

Indeed, democracy is one heck of an expensive business that can be easily manipulated. It is even worse in my corner of the Atlantic.
