It may not be 99%, but mostly Nigerians are corrupt and have corrupt tendency and traits in their orientation. An average Nigerians family expect to make it once their own is in government, and where such their own did not give in to their corrupt minds, they sees him as not helping the family.

I believe we are more propensed or inclined towards corruption than most of the people i have come across, its sad but true though.

There are few indications why bushfellow seem not to be comfortable with this thread. I have inserted his post, bolded his User ID on his post and also copied and pasted his signature. Well, Seun in his wisdom has not deleted this thread.

I have also noticed after the first thirty views the first three respondents were female;
could it be there's a slight gender perspective as to who tends to be more/less corrupt/dubious.

The thread is somewhat funny. I also laughed in astonishment/disbelieve when this Nigerian made the initial comment(which I made the subject of this thresd), before he gave me the detail.

Gosh and I hate that percentage, Guys let me know how you disagree to that percentage;
this is serious, each time I read through my thread again I feel convinced it could be or is true, but believe me, I terribly hate that percentage.

Let's reduce the focus on if I'm the 1% or not.

Only 30% of Nigerians are corrupt just unlike America and Europe where it is 99% that are corrupt

I wonder what the definitions were? Corrupt and Dubious? Does that include the possesion of STOLEN property? If so, I am guilty. AND so also is the US, UK and many other european countries. They all looted and continue to loot the gullible African people. They receive the proceeds of the looting of African treasuries by their leaders and refuse to return these funds.
Of course the majority of Nigerians might be considered corrupt and dubious if you define these terms to the advantage of the 'first to thief'.

People are corrupt everywhere in world but the level of poverty determines the level of corruption, i live in Spain and there are lots of corruption scandals coming up every now and then on the news and if you want to know more google this "operacion malaya" and many more

its obvious from the various replies that we're trying 2 hide from the real issues.methink its highly improbable that the percentage quoted can be right.in any case the truth is we're a very corrupt country and our nationals everywhere don't help issues.i reside in ireland and our reputation here is the same and its not hard to c why(we are the main perpetuators of credit card and welfare fraud.before then our pregnant women invaded the place for freebies,and it didn't take long before they changed their laws regarding citizenship for newborns).we should stop feeling that every country has a thing for us.maybe when the average nigerian starts 2 see a difference between been a thief/corrupt and been a "sharp man" then our image will start to pick up.i hope fellow Nairaland users don't get a wrong impression of me following this post;i remain a very responsible and proud nigerian!!

I don't know where you got the survey from but if your survey is right. I'm one of those 1%, a complete gentleman ! By the way, what do you expect from people who lacks the basic neccessity of life? Tell your white friends to return our looted funds back to us or use it to build public infrastructures in our cities !

I think the orientation is all that matters. Every other country has it's own measure of curruption its just the standard of living that is a major factor.

In any case poverty is not an excuse for curruption. take an example Ghanians was had a battered economy to the extent that they were fleeing their country to Nigeria. That didnt increase the corrupt tendencies in them because the law of the land are followed to the latest. But in naija the reverse is the case.

That is why the wealth is not equally distributed in naija. But to say 99% I disagree b'cos there are a lot of hardworking Nigerians. When people talk about Nigeria, Lagos is the focal point!

After saying all these their are legitimate bussiness men and women and people of good conscience still here!!!

not really. those numbers can be right ONLY if EVERY Nigerian were surveyed and 99% were found corrupt and the other 1% were found not corrupt. i can't be the "missing 1%" since i wasn't surveyed and can't be labelled corrupt or uncorrupt.

you are right based on it being endemic and i said so in my first post and we don't like it because personally it affects me each time i go home (settling area boys, police, npa officials etc etc)

i guess iagree with you a large percentage of nigerians have this tendency but we can eradicate this trend by discouraging it in all its ramification
