The Federal Government and the organised labour have reached an agreement over the consequential adjustment of the new minimum wage. The minister of Labour and Employment (State), Festus Keyamo disclosed this on his twitter handle Thursday night.

Keyamo, who tweeted during the negotiation between the FG and Labour said: “After some delicate negotiations (with both Ministers as conciliators), the government and Labour have finally reached an agreement on the consequential adjustment of other wages following the implementation of the enhanced minimum wage of 30, 000.

“we are working on the communique,” he said.

We’ve reached agreement on minimum wage –Keyamo, Labour

Olufemi Atoyebi , Abuja

The Federal Government and organised labour on Thursday finally agreed on the percentage increase on the consequential adjustment in workers ’ salaries as a result of the new minimum wage of N 30 ,000 .

As the meeting reached an advanced stage , the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo , tweeted from the venue that both parties had reached an agreement, but he did not give details .

The tweet read, “ After some delicate negotiations ( with both ministers as conciliators ) , the government and labour have finally reached an agreement on the consequential adjustment of other wages following the implementation of the enhanced minimum wage of N 30,000 . We are working on the communiqué . ”

In a statement , the President of the Trade Union Congress, Quadri , and the Secretary General, Musa- Lawal Ozigi , confirmed the peace pact , commending the Federal Government and labour for their patience while the National Minimum Wage negotiations lasted .

The statement read, “ We commend the Head of Service of the Federation , Dr Folashade
Yemi -Esan , and her team for their sincerity .

Though they argued that the government could not afford to meet our earlier demand of N 30 ,000 minimum wage across board because of the economic situation in the country , we made them understand that some people could not be more Nigerian than others . If we are tightening our belts , government should also do so.”

The secretary of the JNCSNC , Alade Lawal , also confirmed the figure to our correspondent through a text message after confirmation on what was agreed with the FG was sought from him.

Lawal had earlier told our correspondent that the parties had reached an agreement on the wage crisis.

He said both parties agreed on 23.2 percentage increase for workers at grade level 07;
20 percent for those at grade level 08;
19 percent for workers at grade level 09;
16 percent for those on levels 10 to 14;
and 14 percent for workers at grade levels 15 to 17 .

The meeting was still going on as of the time of filing this report ( 12 . 56 am) on Friday .

The agreement did not come easy as negotiations between both parties collapsed several times in the last six months .

The agreement came 182 days after President Muhammadu Buhari signed the new minimum wage into law .

After the necessary legislative processes at the National Assembly , Buhari signed the 2019 New National Minimum Wage Bill into law on April 18 , 2019 .

Thursday ’s meeting was slated to begin at 7pm but more than one hour after the labour team , led by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba , and the government team had taken their seat , the Minister of Labour and Employment , Dr Chris Ngige, and Keyamo came into the conference room.

Present at the meeting were the General Secretary of the Trade Union Congress, Musa Origi; NLC General Secretary , Emma Ugboaja ; Chairman of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council, Simon Anchaver ; Secretary of the council, Alade Lawal ; the President , Nigeria Union of Civil Service , Amaechi Lawrence ; and the union ’s General Secretary , Issa Aremu .

On the government side were the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation , Folashade Yemi-Esan ; acting Chairman of the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission , Ekpo Nta ; and the Permanent Secretary in the labour ministry , William Alo .

Ngige reminded the gathering that the future of the country must be given consideration in the negotiations .

He said if the country became broke because of personnel cost , it would suffer the consequences .

The leader of the government team , Folashade Yemi -Esan , said since Wednesday ’s meeting adjourned around 2 am on Thursday , members of the government team had not rested because of the enormous work given to it for an agreement to be reached at the Thursday meeting .

What now happens to the over 90% of Nigerians that will not benefit from this increase.

On top of this, there are increases and introduction of new taxes everywhere and the government workers continue to put us all into deeper inflation.

A bag of rice will now be at least 30k after the implementation.

This increase is simply a Greek gift but who suffers it more, the ordinary Nigerians and non government workers.

Immediately the industrial action was averted, I knew that it won't stand again. When the minimum wage was #18,000.00, a bag of rice was about #6,000.00. Now at #30,000.00, a bag is sold at #27,000.00. Meaning that one just works for a bag of rice in a month, no ingredients. God will help us.

If Labour have not be compromise, they will have use the last election as a bargaining chip. Imagine a strike when election campaign is heating up. I know this country will get it right one day! One day!

These people quote percentage as if it is something big deal.
At 100% = 30,000
50% =15,000
25%= 7,500
12.5%= 3,750
6.25% = 1,875
So because una wan add 2000 naira to salary,it took 4yrs.With tax on everything,Very soon Agbero will start collecting VAT from passenger.
Meanwhile it is not hard to Budget 25% or entire Nigeria annual Budget to National Assembly.
Kontinue,God will judge all una.

Something very important still remained unsolved about this whole Minimum Wage Implementation issue..
And That is The Unified Salary Structure across the Nation, both for Federal Civil Service and the States Civil Services..
And the NLC and FG are just seriously avoiding to discuss about it.

Some States in Nigeria have very poor Salary Structure.
And with these new percentages for the increment of the salaries for the specific grade-levels,, some states would just go back to their drawing-boards and reduce their salary structure a lot further, so that they can claim to the media that they are paying the increments.

paying the #30000 that is not the problem the problem is what Will come letter after start paying the#30000?government will increase tax,and the manufacturing industries will increase there produced, and schools will increase there own too,the solution is the government should reduce the price of food and house rent,government they are like devil,devil will give u something with right hand and collect it left hand they never give free rather they will collect double,they will increase the price of fuel the closures of boarders is other sign, because is another ways of getting revenue,and making food price to increase this is just small compare to when they then will start paying the #30000 after labour agree that is the end, the main problems the common man is food and accommodation if the common man will have these reduced then he/she can plan with his remaining money that he/she has, increase what of the private works are they not going to pay tax a many of the Nigerian that are working in public sector what of the Nigerians that are neither working in public non private works what will be there faith some Nigerian are hand worker's and some Nigerian are business men and women,what will be there Faith?

it's a big Shame that NLC is still negotiating with federal govt despite the public release of FG prior to the election that the money will be paid

there is no soothsaying here that, the principals of NLC are compromise hence the unseriousness from federal govt

such a shame because of 30k
