A record deal or a recording contract is a legal agreement between a record label and a recording artist (or group), where the artist makes a record (or a series of records) for the label to promote.

Generally in this case the record label pays for the making of the music, I mean the record label pays for the recording, distribution and marketing and agrees to pay the artist an agreed share of money from sales of the recordings – this is known as royalty rates.

First step to getting a record deal in Nigeria.
Getting a record deal from a record label can help you in two ways.

First of all it can help you build your music career much faster as they provide you with the necessary resources from the record company.

Secondly, because record companies have lots and lots of connections and the capital you do not have as an independent artist, it gives you advantage to more opportunities.

Step 1: know what record labels want.
The question you need to ask yourself (do you have what the record label wants?)

What these record labels want is not just talent, yes its not all about talent you know why ?, because there are lots of talents out there and too many artists knocking at their doors daily.
