The Lions have relied heavily on Kerryon Johnson this season, with mixed results. Johnson had a huge day in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs (26 carries, 125 yards) before the bye, then managed just 34 yards on 13 carries last week against the Packers.

Johnson is averaging a paltry 3.3 yards per carry on the season as defenses have ganged up to stop the Lions’ running game. He’s one of just two NFL players to log at least 75 carries this year without breaking a run of 15-plus yards, but his presence — and the Lions’ desire to run the football — has helped open space in the passing game.

The Vikings have the NFL’s ninth-ranked rushing defense at 91.5 yards per game, and Lions coach Matt Patricia said they keep the box tightly packed and are “extremely quick” to the ball. With so many defenders close to the line of scrimmage, Johnson should have some big-play opportunities if he gets good blocking. Of course, Harrison Smith is one of the best safeties in the NFL and Eric Kendricks and Anthony Barr are excellent run defenders at linebacker.

As good as the Vikings are against the run, they rank even higher against the pass (seventh, at 218.8 yards per game). Much of their success is due to a ferocious pass rush led by Danielle Hunter and Everson Griffen. Hunter has seven sacks in seven career games against the Lions and has given right tackle Rick Wagner fits in the past.

If Wagner and the rest of the line hold up, the Lions should have some opportunities downfield. Matthew Stafford hit passes of 66 and 58 yards on the first two drives of last week’s game against the Packers and is averaging a career-best 8 yards per completion this year.
