On Sunday, been October 20, MTN Nigeria sent messages to all its subscribers nationwide saying, it was going to start charging #4.00 per transaction for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) used for banking service.

However, the attention of the federal government has been drawn to the matter, reacting in a press release, the federal government through the Ministry of Communication and the office of the Honourable Minister of Communication, Dr Isa Pantimi ordered the Nigeria Communications Commission to stop such arrangement with immediate effect until the he is properly briefed about such charges.

The minister gave the advice at a meeting with NCC management on the progress made in the implementation of the Short-Term Performance targets set for it.

The minister lamented by saying that '' “with the prevailing high cost of data in Nigeria, the citizens still do not enjoy value for money as subscribers’ battle daily with illegal deduction of data, poor Quality of Service (QoS), among others.”

Dr Isa Pantimi reminded NCC that one of their main job as communication regulator in the country, is to protect the interest of Nigerians and disengage all irregularities and unprofessionalism.

The Minister has however told Nigerians that the federal government will get to the root of the matter and ensure a better decision that will benefit mostly Nigerians.

The Minister's attention has also been drawn about how other network providers charges them unjustly, such as Airtel which charges between #50.00 to #52.00 among other network providers.

This thing is not new its just that mtn doesn't charge for using bank ussd code but glo for sure charges me 5 naira per 30 seconds most time they charge like 15 naira only to perform one transfer

I have mobile banking apps and tokens in addition to internet connection.

I use SmarTransfa. It's not only free but get paid also.o

So when government introduce charges on the phone calls we make you think the Telecom wouldn't increase other value add services. Let government be sincere for once.

We have a failed system. Etisalat have placed their charges for the past one year.

It's very appalling. infact I only use 9mobile to receive calls. I don't buy airtime on it again as there tarriff for calls is too high so as there data cost and consumption! Those guys need to go into extinction

Policy they will reimplement, hope you guys remember the time the data volume was reduced, same thing happened.Dullards in government.

Its N4 per 20 seconds.

There is what I don't understand.

Each transaction across banks comes with a banking charge part of which I believed should have been used to be paying for the USSD by the banks.

Does it mean that the banks just charge the money and expect us to pay for the USSD charge by telecoms?

If I have the capability, the CBN governor should be in court now explaining what banks mean by ATM Card maintenance fee and how it came to a point that Banks will wake up to decide any trash with telecoms and we hear the news first from telecom.

I asked GTbank customer care on chat yesterday and he informed me that they were not aware as the bank have not informed them.

Now this Minister is just pissed off because maybe he was not bribed before the implementation.

Its just a matter of time and it MUST be implemented.

That's the change INEC said majority of Nigerians voted.

You must have more than you want to send and also be loaded with airtime to send money in Nigeria.

Oga I have worked with USSD for a long time and today I even own a USSD channel so I can tell you it never been free that's why u cant make transfers when u have Zero units on your phone ..USSD is only free to buy airtime . ..USSD in banking started with the banks buying millions of sessions from Telcos but I wasn't sustainable and many banks refused to adopt till it was agreed to silently pass the cost to user . It's not free sir

MTN does it for free. I think the banks pay them.
Now the banks wants them to bill customers directly.
This morning, I tried to buy recharge card with the ussd,it didn't work. Had to use my bank mobile app to buy.
