Consensus candidate: Okupe slams Ciroma

ABUJA—FORMER Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Doyin Okupe yesterday warned Mallam Adamu Ciroma not to disrupt the country, just as he said that Nigerians will reject any consensus arrangement his ’17 Wise Men Committee will bring forward.

According to Okupe, ‘’While Ciroma and his group are on a fruitless and ignoble search for a Northern consensus candidate, the rest of the country is in search for a complete, knowledgeable, patriotic and honest Nigeria candidate.

‘’Presidential aspirants from the North must be warned clearly that should anyone be chosen as northern presidential consensus candidate, we shall unite in one accord, and nationally reject such an aspirant. Nobody chosen by Ciroma will be voted as president in 2011.”

Speaking with newsmen yesterday, Okupe who called on Nigerians to condemn in totality the position of Ciroma that the North must produce an aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to wrestle for the Party’s Presidential ticket, said, ‘’I believe very strongly and his group are still holding to some doctrine which is north for north, south for south which is a pre-independent and historic doctrine that has lost application in the modern day Nigeria. Such doctrines are antithetical.

‘’They don’t make sense anymore if we are still working on such a platform we should then be discussing how to dismember the country.

If you must galvanize the entire zone of the country so as to bring a candidate, to contest with an imaginary enemy, then the game is moving from a political game to a national warfare and this is not the whole idea and that is why I feel that the statement that was also made to the effect that if President Jonathan wins the primaries, that the northerners will move enmasse troop out of PDP is a joke and almost idiotic because if Jonathan now goes ahead inpite of that and wins the national election, would northerners now troop out of the country?

The former National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention who urged the North to call Mallam Adamu Ciroma to order said:

‘’Nigerians, particularly people from the north should call Adamu Ciroma to order. At this stage of his life, he should not do things, if he has not been able to help Nigeria to develop, he should not now at his later years disrupt Nigeria.

When you pick a northern consensus candidate and you asked him to go and contest, with southern candidate, what do you expect the southern leaders to do, to accept your candidate?

‘’These northern candidates are they northern presidents or are they going to be voted for only in the north? These are the issues that people are not asking Mallam Ciroma. Democracy should be played according to the rules of the game. I think we have a constitution that guides us.

‘’Anything that is extraordinary or extra-constitutional should be condemned by all of us. So what exactly is Ciroma up to? These are issues that one felt require the attention of good and well intentioned Nigerians all over the country to quickly answer.

‘’I think that people like Obasanjo, people like Shehu Shagari and Gowon should can not afford to sleep with this kind of development.

I have restrained myself from making comments because of the respect that one has for the age of Mallam Adamu Ciroma. But if those who are to take the bull by the horn and it is not enough for them to think that people like Ciroma can do what they want, they can’t do what they want.’’
