A relative of my father with mental issues was taken to one of these prayer houses...and till she died...no improvement. And I am not Yoruba but I am from the SOuth. And I am not a Muslim either.

Again, we need better mental health facilites across Nigeria.

To determine the views of sampled subjects about mental disorders and their treatment recommendations of such disorders. This is a cross sectional descriptive study. The subjects were asked to list the causes of mental disorders they know, explain what they think the role of evil spirits in mental disorders is, if any, and to name the treatment options available for these disorders. Medical students who participated in the survey were also re-administered the study questionnaire following their completion of four week's rotation in Mental Health. Medical students (30), nurses (20), medical records officers (20) and 64 others including 10 religious ministers participated in the study. Thirty-eight- (28.4%) respondents thought that evil spirits cause mental disorders, and 88 (65.7%) would recommend prayer houses for the treatment of mental disorders. Medical students, even after their 4 weeks of rotation in mental health, did not differ in their beliefs from the rest of the groups. The knowledge of most interviewees about mental disorders is based on religious beliefs without scientific foundation. Adequate training in psychiatry for medical students, interaction of psychiatrists with their non-psychiatrist counterparts, public enlightenment about mental disorders may be necessary to raise the level of awareness/general knowledge of, and reduce superstitious beliefs about psychiatric disorders.

In Nigeria, an estimated 20%–30% of our population are believed to suffer from mental disorders.[2] This is a very significant number considering Nigeria has an estimated population of over 200 million. Unfortunately, the attention given to mental health disorders in Nigeria is at best, fleeting; the level of awareness of the Nigerian public on mental health issues is also understandably poor, and the misconceptions regarding mental health have continued to flourish.

The 2006 WHO-AIMS report on mental health system in Nigeria made some telling revelations. It reports that “there is considerable neglect of mental health issues in the country. The existing Mental Health Policy document in Nigeria was formulated in 1991. Since its formulation, no revision has taken place and no formal assessment of how much it has been implemented has been conducted……No desk exists in the ministries at any level for mental health issues and only four per cent of government expenditures on health is earmarked for mental health.”[3] It also unearthed other issues related to mental health. These include unavailability of essential medicines at health centers, unavailability of physicians to run primary health care centers and the lack or restrictions to the prescription of psychotropic medications. It also identified that there are only a few nongovernmental organizations involved in individual assistance activities such as counseling, housing, or support groups.

There aren't enough proper facilities for mental health, and even if they were...finding staff for them is another matter.

So that leaves ill trained religious people who just use evil methods on the kids.
