Lagos State has again failed to make its budget public four months after it was signed into law by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

This is despite Freedom of Information requests by The PUNCH to the Secretary to the State Government and the House of Assembly.

Our correspondents also paid 10 visits in three months to both the legislative arm of government and the governor’s office but it was the same reply, “It is not yet ready, please come back later.”

After the budget was signed into law by the newly inaugurated Babajide Sanwo-Olu on June 3, 2019, The PUNCH wrote an FoI request, seeking the release of the budget details on June 13, 2019.

On Monday, July 8 – that is, three weeks after The PUNCH’s submission of the FoI letter requesting the budget – one of our correspondents visited the Governor’s Office at Alausa, Ikeja, to ask for an update.

A week later when the correspondent again went to the office, Adedeji said he had not received any word yet on the FoI letter from the governor. Thereafter, he asked the correspondent to write a reminder to the office.

However, subsequent calls and text messages were not responded to.

The lack of transparency regarding budgeting and procurement in Lagos State has been a source of worry in the last eight years.

The state government has repeatedly ignored FoI requests, insisting that the Act only applies to Federal Government agencies despite a judgment by a Court of Appeal last year that the Freedom of Information Act was applicable to all states in Nigeria.

An FoI request regarding the total amount budgeted for the upkeep of former governors of Lagos State was also ignored last year by the Akinwunmi Ambode administration.

When will LASG learn to adhere to FOI, especially the ones that had to do with governance?

Why must the details of budget not be ready when u've already budgeted N873.5b?.. is d budget not supposed to be the aggregation of all the details in d first place? Why must d aggregate be ready when the components that made the aggregate are not ready? Its like having an answer when there's no question.

Lalasticlala and Mynd44, what could be wrong with Lagos?

Lagos with all its wealth is still crawling and celebrating road constructions.
By now lagos with all its wealth should have a functional rail, near stable power supply, good housing policies to stop the springing up of "face me I face you" and its own international airport somewhere in the lagos island.

The people are not yet interested in that, for now it is how they will be queueing in a politician's house or office for little crumbs like, school fees, house rent, naming ceremony etc instead of getting a life
Until the standard of demand of the electorates improves nothing will change

lol, the blue line will take eternity to construct..a line of about 40km, already overpriced and that price should build at least 1 or 2 more lines.

Power is on the concurrent list, more like a FG entity, not state.... so, electricity problem should be blamed on FG and not LASG.

A state owned airport is not needed since one is operational in d state, LASG should just collaborate with FG on upgrading MMA instead.
