A Russian solider who was 'skinned alive' by a mother bear with two cubs as he collected crabs on a beach has died, say reports . Alexey Ivanovsky, 36, was savaged by the beast in the remote Kuril islands.
The skin on his scalp, back and buttocks was ripped away, one of his ears was torn off, and a leg needed to be amputated because of the severity of his wounds.
Ivanovsky suffered clinical death immediately after the attack but was resuscitated, and his ear was sewn back on him.
He was flown 250 miles to regional capital Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk but died nine days later from a heart attack.
Locals had donated blood and held prayer vigils for him.
Ivanovsky was collecting crabs when he was cornered by a 'group' of brown bears including cubs in a pincer movement, according to reports.
It was an adult female that attacked him, clasping his leg in its teeth and clawing off his skin, and seeking to drag him away. Onlookers threw stones at the bear - a mother seeking to protect her cubs.
A man named Alexander, 37, was also wounded by the bear as he tried to save Ivanovsky.
The second victim's wounds were not life threatening. 'People threw everything to hand at (the bear),' said one local account.
'It dragged Alexey, but our acquaintances …chased it away only by driving at it [in a car] and dazzling with headlights.'
