The welfare of the citizens is one of the major responsibilities of government hence they ensure that they provide employment for the masses.
Government also performs the function of settling dispute between individuals and between individuals and the government. Government does this through the administration of justice.
This is just an ideal concept of how government should work. But unfortunately, here in Nigeria, we have come to accept certain anomalies as the normal way of doing things; providing electricity for yourself is just one of them.
As we grow old as a nation, we are becoming less dependent on government day-by-day due to the fact that we are as private citizens are now shouldering the responsibilities of government despite the fact that we are being heavily taxed by the same government. As a Nigerian, you will provide electricity for yourself (at least 80 percent of your energy needs), send your kids to private schools because the public schools are in comatose. You provide security at your residence, business premises and get escorts (if you can afford) least you will be kidnapped! Being a Nigerian, you have to ensure that you sink a bole hole else you won’t use water! These are just some of the many functions of government that Nigerians are now performing on behalf of the government without getting any accolade from the government. To remind us, the major functions of government
www.selectng.com.ng has enumerated some of those functions bellow:
FUNCTIONS OF GOVERNMENT
All over the world, government performs several functions which include the following:
Security: one of the most important functions of government is to provide adequate security for the protection of life and properties.
Law and order: It is the duty of government to maintain law and order by ensuring that people obey the laws that are made.
Provision of basic amenities: Government also has the responsibility of providing basic social amenities such as good roads, pipe born water, electricity, public health facilities etc.
Employment: The government also performs the function of providing employment for the citizens either directly or indirectly by ensuring that the citizens are gainfully employed by the private sector.
Defense: The government also performs the function of defending the country against external aggressors
