TUITION FEE INCREMENT IN UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI “A THREAT TO NATIONAL SECURITY”

The National Association of university students therefore uses this medium to strongly condemn the recent development in University of Maiduguri considering it as a threat to national security in the country.

The Increment from #26,000 to #34, 900 for Engineering, Nursing,#33,00 to #60,00 and MBBS from #32,000 to #115,000 is totally uncalled for, putting into consideration the economic state of the nation.

Boko Haram can be translated to mean "Western education is a taboo". To this course if the institution located in a state where boko haram insurgency is prevalent decides to increase her tuition fee, it will cause many students to withdraw from school due to their inability to pay their fees and further create a chance for them to join the negative group.

When this has happened the management of the university has aided the negative group thereby achieving their aim which is western education is forbidden. Furthermore, the literacy level in the state which is 14.5% according to the National literacy survey (2010) by National Bureau of statistics will decrease if students drop out of school because of this increment. NAUS sees this as a threat to national security.

This is a call to the federal government of Nigeria, the borno state government, the federal governing council and management of university of maiduguri and all other agencies involved to strictly reconsider their actions because in line with the three C’s in our struggle which are consultation, consolidation and confrontation we have done the two C’s and are left with the third C.
An injury to one student is an injury to all students in Nigeria.
