The NYSC scheme was created in a bid to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war. The unfortunate antecedents in our national history gave impetus to the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps by decree No.24 of 22nd May 1973 which stated that the NYSC is being established “with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity”. As a developing country. Nigeria is further plagued by the problems attendant upon a condition of under development, namely; poverty. mass illiteracy, acute shortage of high skilled manpower (coupled with most uneven distribution of the skilled people that are available), woefully inadequate socioeconomic infrastructural facilities, housing.

in addition, water and sewage facilities, road, healthcare services, and effective communication system. Faced with these almost intractable problems, which were further compounded by the burden of reconstruction after the civil war, the government and people of Nigeria set for the country, fresh goals, and objectives aimed at establishing Nigeria as:

A united, strong and selfreliant nation
A great and dynamic economy
A land of bright and full opportunities for all citizens, etc.
Getting a favourable NYSC placement is part of the basic concerns of any fresh university graduate. Everyone is eager to be posted to the NYSC best states. Part of the information required from you is to provide four states of your choice from the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria where you will like to do your NYSC.

There are a number of factors to consider when seeking for a favorable youth service location. These factors include;

Distance to home state
Security
Standard of living
Cost of living
Accommodation
Job opportunities available
State salary plan

Apart from the sum of 19,800 which the federal government pays to serving corpers, State governments also pay a stipend to serving corpers posted to their states. The prayer of every Nigerian Corper is to be posted to the best and least expensive state. With knowledge of these concerns, I made some research and put together a list of the best states to undertake your NYSC program and how much these states pay.

LIST OF 8 NYSC BEST STATES AND THEIR PAY GRADE
1. ABUJA

Want to have a taste of the country’s money? Abuja is the place. Abuja has the highest cost of living in the country. From transportation to housing and high competition for job opportunities, Abuja can be a bit tiring and expensive (NO GO DEY DO PASS YOURSELF).

There is actually good security and a very good standard of living which makes it suitable for those from a middle class family.

Abuja doesn’t pay Corpers. But there is a high chance you will be payed at the organization you work.

2. LAGOS STATE

The almighty Lagos. Lagos state is the most popular mega city in Nigeria. For this reason, serving in Lagos isn’t so cheap. Asides that, there are many engagements and activities in Lagos state. Many of the factors that come into play in Lagos are transportation cost, high and dense traffic, cost of living. Apart from all these, Lagos state offers the highest number of job opportunities than any other state in Nigeria.

This is the reason why most corpers are usually happy when they are posted to Lagos State. It is also relatively safe without any major security concerns. It is regarded by corpers as the best state to be posted to in Nigeria.

Lagos state pays about ₦10,000 to ₦15,000 to corpers in the ministries while it pays ₦5,000 to those in the LGA. In total, a corper earns about ₦25,000 to ₦30,000 monthly.

3. AKWA IBOM
Akwa Ibom is another very popular option because it is a flexing state. The security condition in the state is relatively very good, cost of living is reasonable, food is cheap (who doesn’t love food), transportation is cheap and there are a lot of amazing activities to engage in. The government of Akwa Ibom state pays its NYSC corpers immediately after the orientation camp. The state also has high level of development to boast of.

Akwa Ibom state pays about ₦5,000 monthly. So your average salary is about ₦25,000 monthly in total.

4. CROSS RIVER
With major emphasis on calabar, Cross River is one of the best states to undergo your service program. The state is very rich in culture and has a lot of recreational activities which will make your service period very fun. The cost of living is very moderate, food is cheap, good infrastructure, accommodation cost is very reasonable, standard of living is high and the state has very good security.

Cross River pays about ₦3,000 monthly to NYSC corpers. So your total allawee will be about ₦23,000.

5. ANAMBRA STATE
Anambra state is also a high paying state which is also a very good place to be posted to. Food, accommodation, transportation and housing are cheap in Anambra. Anambra also has the largest market in the country which is located in Onitsha. Opportunity for trading is very high and job opportunities are also available. But security in the state is not very good except in the state capital, Awka.

Anambra pays about ₦9,000 to its NYSC corpers. This raises your monthly salary to about ₦28,000 monthly. Presence of industries in the state is very high also. It is a good place to go into trading.

6. NIGER STATE
Security conditions in Niger state are very good. It is one of the states in Nigeria with the highest electricity production because of the presence of Kanji Dam in the state. Cost of living in the state is very low and so is feeding and accommodation.

Niger State pays about ₦60,000 in gross total at the end of your service program. This indicates ₦5,000 monthly.

7. ENUGU
Although their pay is low, Enugu is no doubt one of the best states to be posted to be posted to. Food, transportation and housing are cheap. Enugu state also has very high number of job opportunities which can be an advantage to you. Lifestyle is fun; plenty flexing. Security is very good, with cost of living being very moderate.

Enugu state pays just ₦1,000 to corpers in urban areas and ₦4,000 to corpers in rural areas. Very little abi?

8. KANO STATE
This is one of the major commercial cities in the country. I actually have some experiences there. I was born and bred in Kano state. Youth Service in Kano state will be a very beautiful experience. Contruary to popular opinion, Kano state is relatively safe now. I still visit from time to time. Cost of living in Kano state is very low. Things are so cheap; from food to clothes to housing and transportation. I always save a lot whenever I am in Kano state. Kano state also has a high number of industries and the state general has a lot of job opportunities available to indigenes and non-indigenes.

Kano State pays its corpers about 5,000 monthly. So you can expect ₦25,000 monthly in total. If you’re lucky, you might be posted to an organization that also pays you.

9. JIGAWA STATE
Jigawa State is located up north, and is know as a very peaceful state in Nigeria. Alsp, the cost of living in this state is very low and things are relatively cheap. this will be good for Nysc corpers. But in terms of social activities, Jigawa has low social life.

JIGAWA IS PAYS #5000 TO THOSE IN L.G.A, #16000 TO THOSE WORKING IN HOSPITAL AND #26,000 TO MEDICAL CORPERS CURRENTLY

Other states like Taraba and Kaduna pay serving corpers 5,000 monthly. Ekiti State pays a gross total of 60,000 at the end of the 12months service year which is an accumulation of 5,000 monthly.
