Following border closure, smugglers have now derived new means and avenues to move in contrabands into the country in the name of making ends meet.

Ranging from risking it at dangerous bush paths to smuggling rice in their body.

Below is a video of some men smuggling an SUV into the country underwater.

According to an eyewitness, the incident happened in a yet to be disclosed area in the northern part of Nigeria. Watch video.

The only thing worse than a bad policy is to enforce it. Import duty on cars should be reduced to 20% again. Ban on rice importation should also be lifted and import duty slashed to the 10% it once stood.

Protectionist walls simply encourage smuggling, strengthening corrupt acts rather than reducing it

This particular smuggling idea has got to be one of the most idiotic and pointless endeavors ever carried out by human beings.

All the electronics in those submerged vehicles will be ruined, and will require replacement, and of course the entire engine will be full of mud and water that will destroy it very quickly, unless it is completely dismantled and then reassembled dry.

From a practical standpoint, it may in fact be the case that the entire engine and drive-trains are already removed from those vehicles, and floated on rafts across the river, to keep them dry until the vehicles have been dried out on the other side of the river, ready for re-assembly.

Still a crazy idea, unlike any capers these eyes have seen in many moons.

Fake news. This is probably an unrelated event . No car dealer will allow his car go through this crap as it will damage the car

does it even make sense that a submerged car would hold the same value in the market as the neat ones ariving through seaport? .. since Smuggling is done to maximise profits, then why will anyone want to incure further expenses on car repair if he wants to make profit

Maybe this is the way STOLEN cars are spirited OUT of Nigeria, for sale as "water damaged in Texas" vehicles, throughout the rest of West Africa. Everybody knows that Texas floodwaters tastes like Budweiser Beer that is actually good for cars in moderation, while Nigerian river water tastes like sewage that totally destroys engines.

Anything that is stolen cost the thief NOTHING in monetary terms, so if smuggling it across a river and thus reducing the value of the car by 90% becomes the only means of earning the salary of a thief, I see no reason why such hardened criminals would hesitate to continue business as usual.

Selling ten water-damaged cars at a tenth of their true value, is still better than sitting at home hungry, for those who rely on crime as a career.
