Pele is considered as one of the greatest of all time when it comes to soccer.He was born in the year 1940 in Edson Arantes do Nascimento in Tres Coracos in Brazil.He acquired his nickname 'PELE' during his childhood days.

He started playing football as a teenager in a minor league soccer club in Bauru in San Paulo state,then in 1956 he joined the major soccer league-Santos Football Club in the city of San Paulo.He lead the Brazilian national team to victory in his first World cup and scored a brace in the finals against Sweden at just 17 years of age.

Pele,as we all know was blessed with control,power,speed,balance and an amazing ability to anticipate movements of teammates and opponents as well.He seemed like a giant in the pitch although he was five feet eight inches tall.

He lead his club side-Santos,to three national club championships,the World club title in 1958 and two south American championships.Also,Brazil benefited from his presence in their squad immensely as Brazil won the World cup in 1958,1962 and 1970 under his leadership.

Pele achieved the fate of scoring his 1000th goal by a penalty kick against Vasco da Gama while eighty thousand adoring fans in Maracana stadium gave him a standing ovation,he was cheered wildly,even though Santos was an opposing team.

During his very long career in football,Pele scored 1,282 goals in 1,363 games.He was handed the International peace award in 1978 and in 1993 he was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

He announced his retirement in 1974 but came back in 1975 to accept a $7million contract to play with NEW YORK COSMOS.He led the team to a league championship in 1977 and did much to promote soccer in the united states.He finally played his final football match in a Cosmos match against his old team Santos in October 1,1977.
