My Wild Dog by gamaliel121(m): 4:18pm On Nov 25, 2019 |
Hi guys, this is my first post on pet section and I’ll keep it short. So I have a dog. His name is tiger, very strong and sharp. My problem is, I can’t take him for a walk in fact anytime I try to walk him, he ends up taking me for a walk.. lol He tries to attack every living thing he meets on the way and it’s very embarrassing. So has anyone here experienced such and how can I fix this. This behavior started right from when he was still small..

gamaliel121: I'm sure he wasn't socialized from a young age to be comfortable with dogs. Like in the dog socialization and training thread I made, this could result in him pulling on his leash anytime you take him for a walk because all these sensations are strange to him. The behaviour can be corrected though but you have to put in the work. Let start with that of him taking you on walks . You'll need to purchase a new leash. Go to any pet store and tell them you need a leash specifically to control your dog on walks. I've forgotten the name but It's a leash that turns the dogs head to the side when he starts pulling (the turn doesn't hurt the dog). With this he would learn to stop pulling. Solve this first then we'll move to that of its dog aggression. You can contact me if you need further help |

Endy10: He should go for a choke collar instead, this would make the dog learn how to behave during walks. I'm getting one once my dog grows into adulthood

vincentjk: Why go for something extreme when you can use one that won't cause pain to the dog and works well. Yes sometimes it works, but you risk making your dog fear walks cause he might associate his lease and walks to pain from the choke collar. The same goes for shock collars. |

gamaliel121: Not at all... Many people use it esp for aggressive dogs like yours |

Endy10: It's specially designed for dogs like op's. It won't wound your dog rather control it to stop pulling and attacking other dogs on the road The problem is when used wrongly it could choke your dog there by causing problem The right name is prong collar

vincentjk:I don't support all these choke collars and prong collars, I feel the dog just needs socialisation and positive conditioning. and I feel if the prongs on that collar are strong enough to press through the fur of a hairy dog to actually work then it should be painful to the dog which can make the dog associate walks with pain or harm the dog if it decides to ignore the collar and still attack. they work by causing pain and discomfort to the dogs by pinching the skin around their necks anyone that's telling you it doesn't hurt is lying to you. over time, they can cause scratches, tears and even damage your dog's windpipe especially if you have a stubborn and strong willed dog |

gamaliel121:well there's the reason to your problem that dog needs some serious socialisation before it can get balanced on walks, forcing it to obey you during walks and struggling with the dog on the road is a big no because the dog is only going to get frustrated and channel it's anxiety to every living thing on the road like you said. if you are ready to start socialisation for him you'll have to dedicate some time to work on him, *you'll need to teach him a "put down" command(something that means stop or no or calm down, just something to make him know you want him to stop what he's doing), *you'll need treats to congratulate him when he checks up on you during walks (when he comes close to you or looks at you, if you do this often he'll stay by your side and follow your movement), *you'll need to desensitize him to crowds (chain him to a place where he can see several people and vehicles pass for a long time, if you do this frequently he'll get used to seeing people on the road and stop trying to attack. *put him on a short leash(wrap his leash around your palm to shorten it) to restrict his movement when you suspect he's getting aggressive or ready to attack or when you're close to what usually triggers him to attack. it'll reduce the probability of him attacking and if he does you'll have better control over him. *before you walk him, after you bring him out you can wait a little for that initial excitement to go before you walk him, he'll be calmer. if you did all these things when he was a puppy, no matter how stubborn or aggressive the dog is,walking him won't be hard. you should start practicing the commands and leash control with the dog in the compound then on empty roads and finally crowds if you do these things frequently then you'll see a change in his character during walks 2 Likes |
