Nigerians have taken to social media to react to what Aisha Buhari, wife of the president said on the social media bill.

She said the social media bill should not be a problem to pass using China as an example.

She said, “On this issue of social media, you cannot just sit in the comfort of your house and tweet that the vice president has resigned. It is a serious issue.

If China can control over 1.3bn people on social media, I see no reason why Nigeria cannot attempt controlling only 180m people”

She disclosed this on Friday, November 30, at the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) General Assembly and National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the National Mosque Abuja, with the theme, “Islam and National Development”.

It should be recalled that the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, November 5, re-introduced a bill that will regulate the use of social media in the country.

The bill, ‘Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulations Bill 2019’ was one of the 11 bills read for the first time at the floor of the house.

The sponsor of the legislation, Sen. Mohammed Sani Musa, said the bill was aimed at curbing fake news on the internet but this action has been greeted by controversial reactions.

However, Nigerians who use the social media platform called Twitter, has condemned what the wife of the president said.

Some of the reactions;

@zaddy_nomso said, “Dear Aisha Buhari China also kills their corrupt Politicians, we would love Nigeria to start practising that first. Your Aide stole over N2bn, where he saw that money only you know.”

@TheOsasCruz said, “Dear.... Aisha Buhari

Now I know Buhari was Right, - Maybe you truly belong in the kitchen.

China Executes their corrupt politicians, let’s attempt that.

Social media is not the problem of Nigeria, Corrupt politicians are the problem we have.”
