HARASSMENT OF TEACHERS AT EJI-OBA HIGH SCHOOL, OBA-ILE, AKURE, ONDO STATE

An ugly incident happened at Eji-oba High School, Akure, Ondo state on December 4, 2019.

It was another tragedy of the ill-fated rise of moral decadence amongst youths in the country and calls for immediate action(s) from all responsible organizations, individuals and government parastatals, both within and outside the state.

It is not uncommon to find indigenes within the school's premises during normal school hours - roaming aimlessly, no thanks to the lack of proper fencing around the school - a major threat to lives and properties within the school environment.

Hoodlums gain easy access to the school premises and this recent incident can be partly attributed to the aforementioned.

One of the school's teaching staffs was attacked and greatly wounded by some unknown thugs who infiltrated the school.

The staff, who goes by the name; Mr. Salami, caught a female student cheating during the ongoing first term examination in the school and rightfully disciplined the erring student.

The said student then reportedly left the classroom, went home and brought in hoodlums (who were accompanied by her mother) to beat up the teacher - for upholding the school's values and fight against examination malpractice, which has resulted to a great decline in the quality of graduates from secondary schools in Nigeria.

Luckily, the hoodlums were apprehended and were taken to the nearest police station (Oba-Ile Area Command) so as to ensure proper handling of the case.

But on getting to the police station in the early hours of December 5, 2019, it was discovered that the hoodlums had already been freed. A wrong move to be sincere and a further proof of the corruption that has eaten deep into the society. The aggrieved staffs held a protest in front of the said police station with calls for justice, and staffs' security (including Corps Members serving in the government owned secondary school).

This is a call to relevant bodies across the nation to help ensure that the perpetrators of this evil are brought to book.

This should be escalated and heads need to roll in that police station. Until people start paying for their negligence and corrupt practices, we are going no where.

They should flood the social media space with the police station name and the police involved including the DPO.

My advice to teachers, when you punish be moderate to avoid stories that tourches today are not yesterdays.
