The perosn of God was revealed in Jesus. Jesus always was compassionate towards sinners in his encounters with them and he is the express image of God the father. Me and you can't live a holy life by our own efforts, Jesus came in human form went through temptations that man goes through and he never sinned therefore he was qualified to die for the sins of all men.
Now Salvation is wrought or secured by the believing in that work that Jesus did on Calvary. You believe that he is God incarnate and you believe he died in your stead and his righteousness will be given unto you as a gift not by your works but by faith.
A Christian doesn't work out righteousness to be saved no a Christian is first saved and the righteousness of God in him will continue to find expression through him as he matures and grows to be like Jesus each day. Most of the Christians you talk about interprets this in reverse.
