It is supposed to be a money spinner. Water transportation for a country with rivers and navigable waters in every part should be big business. It is for those who venture into it.

But in an atmosphere characterised by lax supervision and inadequate safety regulation, the cost in avoidable human lives lost to mishaps is unacceptable.

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is expected to have sole power to regulate the sector in every part of the country. With its headquarters appropriately located in Lokoja, the confluence town where rivers Niger and Benue meet,  and capital of Kogi State, its area and field offices are expected to directly deal with local challenges.
