migrantDentist: I was in Gambia 2006,fairly small country, not up to Lagos population as at then. Base their income mainly on tourism back then. Yes there is serious discrimination towards Nigerians, sadly it hasn't changed till now. I think it boils down to seeing us as a competition or let me say go getters, seems their men can be very very lazy. All you see them engage in is smoking their greens and drinking their teas. I was almost torn apart for trying to woo a white lady, reason? They see these white women as their tickets to heaven. I did enjoy my stay,I was in bakau in Banjul ,stayed at the friendship hotel close to the stadium. Toured serekunda, Went to one of their clubs i can't remember the name,I had to take off my jersey before entering the club because they had this rule you can't get into the club if your cloth is spotting a huge number lol. Very quiet and peaceful place to be, but my turn off was getting extra dark from their weather lol. I got back to Nigeria looking like burnt offering Will be visiting again, just to see how well the place has developed. Like the kairaba beach hotel, the Hilton at the beach and so on. 6 Likes |

migrantDentist: Gambia is a beautiful country. It is still one of my dreams to maybe retire there someday having thoroughly enjoyed visiting. Is your salary locked in dollars or dalasi, and do you work for a Govt or private dentistry? 1 Like |

Nice reading all the comments here but I don’t think I will settle here in Gambia or any African countries if I am a dentist / Doctor / nurse / Radiographer . I can go to Gambia or any of African countries to work so I can make money to start how I will relocate to Europe / Canada / US /Australia. It is easy for health workers to move to Europe countries especially UK If you pass the necessary exams. |

I LIVED IN THE REPUBLIC OF E GAMBIA IN 2001/2002. THOUGH DEVELOPMENT HAS GONE PAST MY DAYS THERE AS I CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE GOINGS-ON THERE. GAMBIA IS A SMALL ECONOMY WITH MOST ACTIVITIES MAINLY AROUND SEREKUNDA AND BANJUL BEING ITS HEADQUARTERS BUT ONLY AN ADMINISTRATIVE AREA. BUT OTHER DEVELOPING TOWNS ALSO EXIST BUT THE ACTION IS CENTRED AROUND SEREKUNDA AND ITS ADJOINING AREAS. THE NIGERIAN HIGH COMMISSION IS AT BAKAU. AND THE NIGERIAN COMMUNITY'S PRESENCE IS STRONG. HOWEVER, THE IBO ETHNIC ASSOCIATION IS STRONGER WITH GREATER RESILIENCE TO HELP MEMBERS THAN IN THE LARGER NIGERIAN SIDE WHICH HAS THE YORUBA MUSLIMS, EDO AND FEW OTHER ETHNIC ASSOCIATIONS. A DEMOCRACY, IT IS MULTI-ETHNIC WITH ISLAM BEING ABOUT 80% AND 17% CHRISTIANS MAINLY WEST AFRICAN CITIZENS WITH NATIVE CATHOLICS AND OTHER EVANGELICAL AND MAINSTREAM CHURCHES. BUSINESS IS SLOW. HARDLY ANY INDUSTRIES! ECONOMY DRIVEN BY EUROPEAN VISITORS WHO BRING IN MILLIONS HENCE HOTELS ARE ALWAYS BOOMING! THE HEALTH SERVICES HAVE IMPROVED WITH A TEACHING HOSPITAL ATTACHED TO A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY. JOB OPPORTUNITIES ARE SCARCE IF NOT NON-EXISTENT EXCEPT POSSIBLY FEW IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR. YAHOO-YAHOO IS STRONG WITH OUR USUAL PEOPLE PLAYING A MAJOR ROLE. IMMIGRATION IS TIGHT AND ILLEGALS WON'T HAVE THINGS EASY ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY DON'T RENEW THEIR STAY ANNUALLY. IT IS ONE SMALL NATION WITH STRONG INTERNET PRESENCE. THEY STARTED BROWSING BEFORE NIGERIANS! MOST INDOLENT YOUTHS ARE WORSHIPPING THE INTERNET WITH PORNOGRAPHIC SITES LIBERALLY ENGAGED. NIGERIAN CHIRCHES ARE THE BIGGEST, HEALTHIEST, RICHEST AND MOST INFLUENTIAL. WINNERS CHAPEL, AT A TIME, WAS A SUSPICIOUS MINISTRY WITH DEPOSED PRESIDENT YAHYA JAMMEH BOYS ALWAYS SENDING SPIES. REASON WAS THE NATURE OF CARS THAT ARE USUALLY PARKED DURING WORSHIP SERVICES! RCCG, MFM, LORD CHOSEN, DEEPER LIFE, AND MAYBE A HUNDRED OTHER CHURCHES LITTER THE GAMBIA LANDSCAPE BUT NOT WITHOUT PERSECUTIONS BUT ULTRA-MUSLIMS WHO ARE BENT AT CLOSING ALL CHURCHES IF THEY COULD HAVE THEIR WAY. NEVERTHELESS, THE GAMBIA IS GENERALLY PEACEFUL BUT MANY NIGERIAN PEOPLE ARE DOING NOTHING EXCEPT INTERNET CRIME ETC. FINALLY, IF YOU DON'T HAVE A HANDWORK LIKE ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS REPAIRS, ETC, PLEASE DON'T GO TO THE GAMBIA. YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RAISE MONEY TO RETURN TO NIGERIA IN YEARS TO COME. HELPERS ARE FEW AND ENGAGEMENT WITH FEMALE TOURISTS BU FOREIGNERS IS A TABOO. JUST A BRIEF INSIGHT. 6 Likes |

I think if you're a teacher in a private school earning below 50k. You should plan on relocating to Gambia. My brother in-law, 29years of age read physics and started teaching after service since there was no job. Someone suggested he relocated to Gambia to get a teaching job, he now earns 100k naija money, he teaches in one of these international schools. Took him less than 2 weeks to even get the job. 1 Like |

migrantDentist: Point of correction: There is direct flight to Gambia. Aasky and Airpeace. But airpeace is down now. Gambia is a lovely country to be. No hassles and system failures like Nigeria. I spent close to 20 years in GM. Extremely nice people. Good luck to you OP. Meanwhile pls avoid the beautiful Wollof, Mandinka and Fula girls to avoid the stories that touch! |

This just goes to show you that Nigeria is the worst place to live in Africa. #facts. Even south sudan is not as bad as. I am saying this because even with all we have, we live in penury, this should be the country where everyone should be wanting to be in for quality of life and all that but the reverse is the case. The country is upside down. Imagine ordinary Gambia pays a Nigerian dentist more than in Nigeria itself. A poor country for that matter. The earlier we breakup and fix our pieces, the better for us. 4 Likes |
