Appointment of Supreme Court justices from the Bar has to be barred henceforth, says the chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Mohammad,

Speaking in Abuja at this year’s edition of the annual conference of the justices of the Court of Appeal, the CJN explained that priority must always be given to career judges and justices in such appointments, thereby putting a clog to the possibility of considering practicing lawyers for assuming positions as Supreme Court justices.

He said there are problems in appointing judges to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court from the Bar, adding that he was not, by his position, denigrating practising lawyers, but that it would be an act of injustice against career judges and Justices who have committed years to the Bench and have no other alternatives the way practicing lawyers do.

The CJN’s position tends to reverse earlier plans by former CJN, Walter Onnoghen to appoint some senior advocates of Nigeria (SANs) to the Supreme Court.

Lawyers can you please tell us the implications of this, because we don't trust this CJN.

This should reduce the incidence of partisan judges in the system.

It means only judges will be considered for any opening in the supreme court.

I don't see anything wrong with that, lawyers who wish to have career on bench can start from magistrate and high court

It should be flexible, lawyers like Aare Babalola, and Femi Falana, have enough vast knowledge of the law to be able to be Supreme Court Judges.

It's not a nice decision, why we pick experienced lawyers from the bar is to sometimes have contrasting opinions from the career judges. They are something like spices. By having only judges. They are trying to limit the kind of judges who have backbones and nothing to lose when challenging their unwise decisions.

He said implications? Is this for the good of Nigeria or a sinister plot to promote a Buharist agenda ?

I don't trust this man. Whatever plans he brings should be carefully examined. If there is any possibility of this plan favouring Sharia judges in future, it should be condemned and not made to see daylight.

This man is dangerous. CJN who promotes Sharia in a country like Nigeria should not be trusted

The implication is simple: only judges will be considered for openings in the SC. Any attempt to conflate the issues is just another exercise in fake news.
