Been hearing about the refinery close to 5years...how long do we wait to see it functioning? Or by the time it is ready, oil will be phased out on earth... everything is currently going electric and solar.
Oil is just one of the numerous products that come out from a refinery. People will still need a lot of fertilizer, a lot of kerosine for cooking , a lot of aviation fuel, a lot of plastic products and so many other products from the refinery

Exactly what am ashamed of... Visiting a private secture and happy to say it will bring development . What about the 3 dead refineries we got?

When would you realise the refineries are dead and would no longer be profitable?

At the end, they would be sold off at a discount and rightly so.

Nigerians cannot run a public enterprise successfully without engaging in criminal acts.

Since the civil service is for us it therefore belongs to nobody and that is the Nigerian attitude.

In any case, Refineries are mostly run by private enterprise the world over.

@Damod88

You are talking of China, what of the US that have the best economy in the world. What about countries like Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Australia, UAE that have better economic indices than China? Even India is still a success story. Is it operating like China? No

Moreover Nigeria's problem is very unique. We have very corrupt, wicked leaders.
All around the world, most of those countries I mentioned are ran by the private sector.
What the government does is strict regulations and control even China does so.

Take example in Nigeria, OBJ s economic policies was that government has no business running any business.
Look at telecommunications, NCC has done an excellent job in regulations of that sector, and we have had a massive success story from our telecommunications sector.

This should be applied to power, petroleum etc sectors but the corruption in government won't allow for that.

don't mind Nigerians. They always blame the constitution which is not the human beings who make decisions. The truth is that no matter the system of government we adopt we will always find it difficult to develop because, as Claude Ake once said, development has not always been on the agenda of Africa leaders. Development is not something you play with as we always do in this part of the world. Even the famed Karl Marx once said that industrial development was a matter of life and death.Countries who are serious and know what they are doing will continue to make money off unserious ones such as those in Africa. China is making a lot of money from dangote refinery more than what Nigeria is making. For instance, more than 80 per cent of the steel used in the construction of the refinery comes from China,in addition to hundreds of Chinese engineers doing the construction. You see when you don't invest in your people they become economic liability that millions of Nigerians have become. African leaders are poorly educated to understand the geo-politics of the world. This is the reason they have adopted the neo-liberal economic policies of the West, which in its entirety call for aggressive privatization of state assets and non interference in the economy by the state. In other words they are saying African leaders should not site industries and leave everything to private individuals. Now tell me how a country with such large number of unemployed and poverty stricken people going to survive if government does not play a role in the economy? I understand that Nigerian government is grossly inefficient in management, but leaving the establishment of industries to private individuals only will not help grow the nation. This is exactly what China rejected which has seen China develop so quickly. Some of the biggest corporations in china today are government owned. Corporations such Sinotrucks, XCMG,JAC motors, JMC motors, Hiense,FAW motors, foton motors, ZOOMLION construction equipment company and many others are state owned. The companies, in addition to creating millions of useful jobs and revenues for both the people and the government, have laid the foundation for technological development of both the country and the private sector, as many people who have previously worked in those state owned companies have gone on to establish their own companies. Example of such company is SANY heavy equipment construction company, which happens to be the six largest maker of construction equipment in the world. With the government being serious in its understanding it has a much bigger role to play in the industrial modernization of the country, Nigeria will continue to be underdeveloped with harrowing poverty for the majority. No private individuals in Nigeria have the capital and technology to do much. The government has to lay down the foundation for industrial development.

Obasanjo wanted to privatise it and Dangote and Otedola bought one of the refineries, but Nigerians protested and so government returned the money to Dangote and he decided to build his own instead.

Yar'adua Refused Sale Of Refineries To Dangote

post=36412137:
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has explained that the sale of two of the nation’s oil oil refineries had been concluded before he exited office in 2007, saying his successor, the late Umaru Yar’Adua, reversed the sale due to “pressure”.

Obasanjo said this in his serialised interview with ‘Book Club’, a programme on Channels Television, monitored in Lagos on Wednesday.

The ex-President said business mogul, Aliko Dangote, leading a consortium of investors, had paid $750m for two of the refineries, as the Federal Government was finding it difficult managing the facilities at the time. He, however, regretted that instead of the Yar’Adua administration to consolidate on the sale so that the investors could turn around the fortunes of the refineries, his successor succumbed to pressure and reversed the sale of the oil facilities.

Obasanjo equally revealed that not only did his successor canceled the sale, he also refunded the $750m paid by the investors. He added, “The refineries are old and Dangote and some investors paid $750m for two of the refineries.

My successor came to office and reversed the sale; he even refunded the money they paid. “So, I went to him and said ‘why did you do this’? He said it was because of pressure. So, I said ‘so the pressure of some people was more important than the interest of the whole nation’! “Right now, you will hardly be able to sell the refineries for more than $250m because they are very old.”

Obasanjo explained that most people, especially leaders, failed to analyse the decisions of those before them before upturning those decisions, pointing out that most leaders yielded to sentiment than informed opinions. http://yesreport..com/2015/07/yaradua-refused-sale-of-refineries-to_29.html

Dangote refinery, largest single train refinery in the world.

Dangote fertilizer plant, largest in Africa

Dangote petrochemical plant, largest in Africa

Dangote gas plant, largest in Africa

Lekki Deep seaport, largest in Africa

Lekki FTZ, largest in Africa

All in Lagos, SW Nigeria

Just imagine the number of jobs to be created, the amount of IGR to be generated, the downstream services, industries and collateral economies to be created...

This is huge for Lagos state and Nigeria in general.
