Emir Sanusi wants Nigeria to ban child brides, Under-18 marriage
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, on Thursday, implored Nigerians, especially Muslims, to give birth to the number of children they can cater for.

Mr Sanusi gave this advice while speaking at the opening of the 108th edition of Islamic Vacation Course (IVC), organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Zone B, held at IVC Permanent Camp, along Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun State.

The Kano monarch expressed a similar view in Kano a few days earlier.

Mr Sanusi, while speaking on the array of social problems bedeviling Nigeria, insisted that the ‘almajri’ challenge in Northern Nigeria is not a religious concern, but a social issue that needs urgent attention.

The almajiri challenge involves out-of-school children who are sent, often by their parents, to Islamic clerics to live and learn Quranic knowledge but often end up begging and doing menial work on the streets. Millions of almajri children roam Northern Nigerian streets amidst efforts of local and federal authorities to solve the problem.

While maintaining that there is a need to get all out of school children back to school, Mr Sanusi said that men should imbibe the habit of marrying the number of women they can cater for.

“If we continue this way, about 40 per cent extremely poor people will be in Nigeria. Poverty in the South West is 20 per cent, in the North, it is 80 per cent, Lagos is 8 per cent and Zamfara, it is 91 per cent.

“We have been talking about almajri for over 30 years. Why are people having family that they cannot maintain? Why are people marrying wives that they cannot maintain? The condition is that you are able to provide for your family.

“Instead of having many children, why not have the ones you can cater for? These are the fundamental questions we should ask ourselves. Most of these children roaming about the streets will be adult in the next 20 years and they will be the ones recruited as political thugs by the politicians in the next twenty years, if we don’t take good care of them now.

“This is my own advice that we must look at. These are not religious issues, they are social issues that need to be addressed”.

The Sultan of Sokoto while speaking urged Muslims not to be provoked by utterances from political or religious leaders but to continue to be law-abiding.

He urged Muslims to work for the unity of the country.

He said, “We will not work to divide Nigeria. We should not take arm, don’t be provoked by any utterances. Be law-abiding wherever you are.”

AbdurRazzak Alaro, a professor of the Department of Islamic Law, University of Ilorin, who was the guest speaker, while speaking on the topic “The Unification”, maintained that unity among Muslims is not an option but an obligation to all Muslims.

“Unity as a concept is very essential in the religion of Islam. God instructed Muslims to unite and work toward unity. Muslims are expected to be united and not disunited. Unity is not a matter of option but obligation. We must be courageous enough to call a space a spade. MSSN has a role to play in unifying Nigerian Muslims.”

The government should provide contraceptives, education and tax incentives to reduce population growth. Follow Singapore example by engaging in both economic reforms and social engineering. They would need to avoid causing other demographic issues in future.

at the end of the day someone amongst them must have to speak up.

If you have 100 children and you're able to give them quality education i don't have problems with you.

I have problems with meh gworo or meh chai who produces lots of children and sends them to al majiri system. Those are the people who become boko haram easily

Can we please leave Ganduje alone? His people voted for him just as you voted your state governor. Are people foolish from your state because they voted your governor?

The issue of almajiri is a not political. It's a social n cultural problem wrapped with the smelly rags of religion to make it look unstoppable just like most evils in Nigeria. It's a ticking bomb waiting to explode. Let's keep talking about it at every opportunity until we wrestle down this demon.

Northern elites are not enlightning their people on birth control, I feel sad when I see those homeless children roaming the street. Many of them dnt even bath for weeks u will see them roaming the streets under a scorching Sun without slippers.
Now tell me if those Children are giving food and small money as small as two hundred Naira they will carry gun and becme suicide bombers. When u talk abt child control to a Northerner they will tel u that their religion does not restrict them from giving birth to as many children as possible.

Northern elites and Islamic clerics need to start door to door enlightenment, educating their pple on the danger of giving birth to many children if u can't take care of them. If some Northerners can hav sense walai Nigeria go better.

The answer to your questions are low standards Sanusi. If there's no consequences for any said action there's no incentive to stop. Lol why are woman are getting with men who aren't taken care of their children? Why dont their friends and family give them fair warning about such a person?

Just ban it completely or regulate it. The Almajari system is Nigerian created problem. Other Islamic societies teach kids the Koran without abandoning their kids. Madrassas teach kids but people ignore that option.

Please don't act like you don't understand what he is saying

The one man with who's sperm produced 9 more people will tell another person to have 3? What does it matter if its '2 per wife' lol, you have 9 children. The fact that you understand what he's saying is the problem with Nigeria.

If you're poor, the law applies one way
If you're rich, it applies another

if you're rich you are asked to come to the police station. If you're poor you're stripped naked and beaten all the way there without a trail. And your justification is he can have 9 children because he can 'afford them'. Are they cars? lol. If having 9 children is a status privileged, how are you going to open your mouth to tell someone not to have them. What if someone told you not to buy an SUV because it's bad for the environment, but that person have 9 SUVs because 'he can afford them'. Nna, do better.

Go true the message again and see what SLS mean. He didn't say you should not marry plenty wives or not having plenty children in as much you can cater for their needs. So your analogy that SLS have plenty children but condemning others is not correlating to his assertion in his message.

Those useless people and good for nothing will start calling for his head now, mind you there is no religion that said we should be given birth to children we can not take care of. I am proudly Muslim and Islam does not said we should be given birth like cockroaches and unable to take care of them, we should give birth base on our capacities but those useless, pelvedophia people up northern part of one country will be hiding under Islam to molest children and given birth like cockroaches and directly creating pool of armies for territories

I need you to do critical thinking. Critical.

People in society emulate their leaders.

If all of the wealthy Igbo men build 2 story houses in the village
The young, poor and aspiring will want 2 story houses and strive for it.
If he tells them not to do it, because he has money and they don't, the impact will be minimal.
What a social leader does, especially the wealthy, is what everyone else will strive to do.
If you, as one man, produce 9 children, it will influence more people to do the same than you saying something contrary from your mouth.

If a wealthy fulani man has 14 children, then loses his fortune, what is next?
If his wealth is divided 14 ways upon death and each of them, like their father, has 14 children, what is next?
Within 2 generations they will also be the same burden on society as everyone elses' children.
If Sanusi believes people should have a limited amount of kids, breeding at a rabbit like rate is hypocritical and stupid.

use critical thinking. 'But he has money' isn't intelligence. Think harder.
