The Government of Ghana has announced its readiness to join the ECO.

This comes a week after eight West African Countries committed to use the common currency, from the year 2020.

A statement from the Presidency indicates that the decision to abandon the Ghana Cedi for the Eco is based on the belief that this will help propel the ECOWAS integration vision.

All this coming to light during the recent visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the Ivory Coast.

Let them use their Eco... Nigeria won't be bullied by western powers to adopt a currency whose viability we have yet to economically diagnose.

That's good. Nigeria will stab both betrayal countries on their faces. I trust Major General Muhammadu Buhari. These ate countries that Nigeria has been given billions of Naira as handouts because they cannot survive on their own. When Buhari starts dealing mercilessly with them, we shall see how France will come to their aid. I trust my President.

Nigeria's population alone is more than the population of the remaining 15 ECOWAS beggar countries, when Nigeria sneezes they will all catch cold and France will not be there to give them cold medicine. That is why when we closed our boarders, they all started starving and France is not able to save them. Just watch how Buhari will whip them all with horse whip in 2020.

Nigeria accounts for 75% of the GDP of West Africa (14 countries).

The Naira will not be affected by this development. It will actually make it easier for Nigeria in terms of sub-regional trade because now we are dealing with just one rival currency in the sub-region, if rival is even the right term.

It must be the alcohol making yall spout off these nonsensical conspiracy theories. The fact they changed currency name doesn't matter. If the called the currency zeni or beri nothing changes. None of the Ecowas member states met the criteria for currency union except Togo anyway. It's been nearly two decades some country has to lead the charge instead just talking.

History of ECO and membership criteria:

On April 20, 2000, in Accra, Ghana, the leaders of six West African countries declared their intention to proceed to monetary union among the non-CFA franc countries of the region by January 2003, as a first step toward a wider monetary union including all the ECOWAS countries in 2004.

source
The meeting was attended by three heads of state, Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Jerry Rawlings of Ghana, and Lansana Conté of Guinea, as well as representatives from Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia. Cape Verde, the remaining non-CFA ECOWAS member, has a currency peg to the euro with the support of Portugal, and was not a signatory of the "Accra Declaration on a Second Monetary Zone."

source
The four primary criteria to be achieved by each member country are: a single-digit inflation rate at the end of each year; a fiscal deficit of no more than four per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP); a central bank deficit-financing of no more than 10 per cent of the previous year's tax revenue, and gross external reserves that can give import cover for a minimum of three months.

Your comment is absurdly stupid. Seek help over your obsessive need to bring up Buhari no matter how irrelevant it is to conversation.

Joining the eco is equivalent to being recolonized.
This Ghanaian president and a lot of West African leaders are freemasons that are subservient to their white masters

If only Nigeria has the balls to stand up to European neocolonialism then so be it. That stupid boy from France that calls himself Macron is about to meet his political waterloo here in Nigeria.

New world order.... If you know you know

The democrats agenda that came to a halt after Hillary Clinton lost the election.

Now they want to frustrate Donald Trump out of office to continue on their implementation agenda.

To a large extent, I believe democracy is evil. Argue with your phone. Majority of evil people will always win just as our politicians are united In looting our common wealth

The eight countries that announced the adoption of ECO have been using CFA franc for so many years without achieving any real economic integration and infrastructural development. Ghana joining them (if they eventually joined) should not be a big deal to Nigeria. All of them put together are too small to threaten Nigeria. If we rush into this France backed ECO, we will be the one to suffer.

Britain is exiting EU and it’s even so difficult. It would have been far more complicated if Britain had ditched the pounds years back for the EURO.

Let’s keep our Naira for now and continue monitoring the situation with our neighbors. If we will join, it should be on our own terms and not a forced marriage that France is trying to arm twist us into using Ghana. Even Ghana may ditch the plan after their presidential election.

Its odd how paranoid, delusional and ignorant you guys are about the topic. Nobody betreyed Nigeria because they didnt break any agreements. Ghana said they want to implement single currency without currency peg. The Former CFA countries always opperated outside of Nigeria influence.

As stated before only Togo met convergence criteria for currency after 2 decades. The rest are just yapping. You guys just shoe horn France into conversation so you dont have to talk about your nations inaction. Why not lead the charge by meeting criteria and have togo join instead of wailing? The rest will join later if they please.

The former CFA countries did three things.
- repatriate foreign reserves from France
- kicked France from monetary board
- changed name of their currency to ECO

Ghana requested:
-Every member member state meet convergence criteria first
- establish central bank
- adopt flexible exchange rate

Nigeria should mind their business rather.

Nigeria as a country has stabbed other west African countries so much at their back.

Who is Nigeria to Dictate to Ghana and. Ivory Coast a sovereign nation on what to do.

The border that was closed, has Ghana not moved on.

Nigerian sponsored media trying to black mail Ghana is a failed propaganda as usual.

Ghana and Ivory owes no one apology in their decisions.

But that's true. Nigeria has no right to dictate to Ghana on what to do. Nigeria has back stabbed others nations so why cry foul now?

Ghana should go on with what they doing. They have our support.
