What is hepatitis?

Hepatitis is a virus infection that harms the liver. It is an inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis often causes little or no rise in temperature. The disease is usually mild in small children and more serious in older persons.


Types Of Hepatitis:
•Hepatitis A: Caused by Hepatitis A Virus (HAV). Transmitted by consuming contaminated food or water or contact from an infected person with Hepatitis A.

• Hepatitis B: Caused by Hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is Transmitted through contact with infected body fluids, blood, vaginal secretion, semen, injection, razor of persons with hepatitis B virus.

• Hepatitis C: Caused by Hepatitis C virus (HCV). It is transmitted through direct contact through injection drug use, unsterile tattoo, body fluids.


• Hepatitis D: Caused by the Hepatitis D virus (HDV). It is Transmitted through direct contact with infected blood. This is a rare type of hepatitis.

• Hepatitis E: Caused by Hepatitis E virus (HEV). It is Transmitted through icontaminated water. It is a waterborne disease caused by HEV.

Causes:
• Autoimmune hepatitis
• Drugs
• Alcohol
• Toxins

Signs and symptoms:
• Yellow eyes and yellow skin (Jaundice).
• Loss of appetite
• weight loss
• Pain on the right side, near the liver.
• Sight or smell of food may cause vomiting.
• Whitish Stool (Faeces)
• Urine becomes dark ( like Coca-cola)

Treatment:
Hepatitis A and B may not require treatment because they go on their own. hepatitis B may require a vaccine. Anti viral drugs will be administered according to the doctors prescription.

Prevention:
• Vaccine
•Good hygiene prevents hepatitis A and E.
•Using sterile tools or objects prevents Hepatitis B, C and D.
• Avoid having sexual contact with those infected.

Complications of Hepatitis:
• Liver Cirrhosis
• Liver Cancer
• Chronic Liver disease (CLD)
• Liver failure which could lead to Kidney failure, bleeding disorders
• Death
