Remember Jesus revealed to John what would happen in the future, not what happened earlier. Re:1:1: The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John. What Jesus was telling John was that the main character in that particular prophecy would be like the Garden of Eden serpent, a deceiver. Please re-read that chapter from the beginning.
