megaxart: Well, this has been thoroughly addressed so no need to continue unnecessary discussion and repititons. Summary: Nigeria may be an English speaking country but NOT a native speaker. 3 Likes |

justt: For the last time. A native speaker of a language is a person who has acquired that language inadvertently from birth as their FIRST language. If your argument is that not every Nigerian is a native English speaker you'd be correct however an overwhelmingly large proportion of Nigerians (especially of the younger generation) are native English speakers. And again, I'm not referring to heritage language or indigenous language because they are not the same thing. The word mother tongue is a direct translation of the German word "Muttersprache" and both words mean the first language you learn as a child. If he learnt English as a first language he qualifies as a native speaker of English, that's the end of that. 2 Likes |

megaxart: It's good you are gradually admitting that Nigeria or Nigerians are not native speakers and you are shifting from the initial argument. Your definition is correct but on the broader sense your argument is a bit faulty because being a native speaker, and in the context being discussed cannot be defined in isolation or based on individuals. It has to be based on your citizenship. In this context of a student seeking an admission, being native speaker or having English Language as your mother tongue means the language is well spoken by everyone in your home country. How many Nigerians speak in English Language, I mean as the main medium of communication? Although you admitted that more of the younger generation now speaks more in English Language but I also see that as an error of hasty generalization because the "younger generation" is not defined. Up to 30 years or under 10 years? So, concluding that "overwhelmingly large proportions of Nigerians are native speakers" may also be incorrect! Most people who speak in English and assuming we are using your definition of native speakers, are the children of elites or those whose parents can afford good private schools. The rest and I'm my own opinion, who are the majority can only communicate in English and cannot be described as native speakers! How many Nigerians can understand what is being said when the real native speakers talk? It's not only being able to speak it; can you understand the real native speakers? This doesn't mean he cannot get an exemption for his admission but claiming to be a native speaker may be far from being true. So, the conclusion is still that Nigeria may be an English speaking country but NOT a native speaker! 2 Likes |

justt: Look at this point I don't really care anymore. I've argued with facts and definitions. He can tell the university and they can consider him as a native speaker (which he rightfully would be). If they do not that'd be quite a shame. Have a nice day. |
Re: General-german-student-visa-enquiries Part 8 by MrAAA2: 4:47pm On Jan 11, 2023 |
megaxart: This was where you categorically stated that he qualifies as a native speaker of English. I only earlier said what he is not a native speaker of English language despite that Nigeria is English speaking country. Someone else said the same thing where we suggested either he presents the test results or explain for a waiver, or request for English as language of instruction from his former sch. After back and forth messages... You are now agreeing with my first comment-"Nigeria is not a native English speaker but English speaking country and he can appeal for a waiver". |
Re: General-german-student-visa-enquiries Part 8 by megaxart(m): 4:56pm On Jan 11, 2023 |
MrAAA2: And I still stand by the fact that he is a native English speaker (if it his in fact his first language). Your argument is that he is not because he's Nigerian and that is flat out wrong going by the definition of what a native speaker is. I in no way agreed with your first comment you need to re read, it's possible you missed something. I am saying that someone being a native speaker is judged individually (A country like the UK has many individuals who aren't native speakers of English). I stated that he should use the fact that he is from an English speaking country to emphasise the validity of the fact that English is his mother tongue, simple as that. It's not even that complicated and at the end of the day it's the school that will decide to rightfully regard him as a native English speaker (and again, they'd be right to do so). This has been drawn out too long and we are cluttering the forum at this point. |

Re: General-german-student-visa-enquiries Part 8 by MrAAA2: 1:21am On Jan 14, 2023 |
Ahanonufranklin: Is it up to 5 working days since you paid? Normal timeline is 3-5 working days to reach the bank, another 3-5 working days for your bank to receive and confirm it before notifying you. Only worry when it's more than 10 working days from initiation, though usually less. |
