lovat: Football lovers in Nigeria will be happy with this development. But it seems like a complicated one and FG hasn't provided much details about the modalities. DSTV will not pay premium fees for rights only to be compelled to share with NTA. They would rather not show any content once their current licence expires. But again the Nigerian market too big and they wouldn't want to lose out. The next few years will be very interesting The good thing is that without exclusivity rights, other broadcasters can also apply for rights to English FA, UEFA etc as long as they can afford it. Mynd44: The statement from FG said they are mandated to "share". They key point is that they are compelled or mandated to, whether they are sharing for a fee or reselling, DSTV has thrived over the years because they have exclusive rights for the sporting contents. Most people only pay the premium DSTV subscription just for sports. This new development will severely impact their business model and they will have to think hard and restrategise before renewing their current licence. 44 Likes 4 Shares |

apoti:DSTV isn't compelled to share. They are compelled to resell such rights at commercially viable costs. Meaning is AIT Wants to buy the rights to also show UEFA games, DSTV must sell to them 55 Likes 4 Shares |

This is a very bad idea. DSTV should be the only cable broadcasting all Football matches. Its not their fault we don't have suave businessmen who are brave to invest in cable stations. Imagine if one useless cable like startimes have monopoly rights to premier league and dstv retains their champion league rights.. are you saying we would start hunting and buying for 2 or more cable TV to watch matches? It's not by force to subscribe for Dstv, if you are broke, you can go for GOTV or Strong TV. Dont be who you are not. 5 Likes 3 Shares |

Look at these fools talking about Monopoly. When you remove the Monopoly from Dangote, then I believe you would be making sense. At least it would create more jobs and a large competitive market. 10 Likes 3 Shares |

Good idea... But do we have broadcast companies that have the finances to compete with DSTV for say, broadcast rigths for Premiership?? HITV failed because in the end they could not compete with the financial juggernaut of DSTV. 4 Likes |

anonimi: You read just one news report and someone's personal opinion and you're already passing judgement. It's certain that your conclusion will be myopic. How can the government ask someone to sell their right for free?! Something they bought with money! You can believe anything as long as it's in line with your whims. 13 Likes |

lovat: Made sense where? You pay for something and a government asks you to share it to your competitors for free? Is that how government has made Dangote and BUA grow into overreaching monopolies? Commendable, in other advanced countries they have anti-monopoly laws that seeks to stop all these unfair trade practices. How can only one broadcaster have the right to broadcast an event in a country of close to 200 million consumers? The end result is that it has made Multi choice's DSTV a must have for anyone who wants to watch EPL thus making other TV stations incapable of generating good viewership and revenue that comes with it 9 Likes 1 Share |
