Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese football player who plays for the Italian Serie A club Juventus. He was born in São Pedro, Funchal, on the island of Madeira, Portugal, and grew up in Santo António, Funchal. Ronaldo’s father, José Dinis Aveiro, was the equipment manager for the local club Andorinha. The name 'Ronaldo' was given to Cristiano as his second name in honour of the then U.S. president, Ronald Reagan. At age 15 Ronaldo was diagnosed with a racing heart that necessitated surgery, but he was sidelined only briefly and made a full recovery after the operation. He first played for Clube Desportivo Nacional of Madeira (his hometown) and then transferred to Sporting Clube de Portugal (popularly known as Sporting Lisbon), where he played for the club’s various youth teams before making his debut on Sporting’s first team in 2002.
