CeterisXVII: Mumu, the typical Nigerian flaw, the inability to see another person's view. Awo was not a saint and for you to say all Yoruba rever him shows you are the fool. Pretty much all of the Nigerian political class have been poor and Awo was no exception. Did the South West not fight alongside the North to force Biafra back into Nigeria? When south westerners knew very well the plight of Igbos in the North that led to Ojukwu's rash decision. Rash because although I understand his reasons, I still think the Biafran war was a MISTAKE... Awo was at the table alongside other Yoruba/Northern leaders to decide the fate of the South East after the civil war. They alongside Northern leaders made some pretty bad decisions which I covered earlier. This led to resentment among Igbo and their region falling behind economically. The South East has only recently closed the gap and that is due to the sheer industriousness of Igbos. My point is this Igbos are certainly not the enemy of Yoruba. Our two nations rub along well, my existence as a man who is half Yoruba and half Igbo is proof of this. Never did either side of my family raise issues with the other on account of their origins. I am very proud of my Yoruba heritage. The history of the city states, from Ife to the rise of Oyo fascinated me as a child. I am probably one of the few Yoruba who is versed in the original Yoruba Ajami script used by the Yoruba before european contact. I still relish the Yoruba religious pantheon and places like Oshogbo still hold a great place in my heart, much to the consternation of my mother who was a religious christian and regards such things as Juju. I have even spent time with our Yoruba brethen trapped across the border in Benin. My point is this, the Arewa region has dominated Nigeria politically and that is because Ahmedo Bello was successful at bringing the North together as Arewa. Places like Yobe were historically never part of the Arewa region, but you would never know it today. For the South to have more say politically we must come to together. Then we will have more of a voice politically. Out of the Nigerian leaders, southern ones have undoubtably been better. Only a few like Gowon who commissioned the national stadium in Lagos and major bridges remotely tried to show regional balance. Murtala Mohammed was another as he wanted to rule Nigeria for Nigerians and the west quickly put an end to his ambitions. Take Obasanjo, he may have been corrupt but compared to the useless Buhari he did achieve a lot. He got rid of our Paris club debt, kickstarted economic growth 6% on average, sorted out the phone system for example. Jonathan too was corrupt but he got the airports renovated, started rail projects and the economy was growing at a good rate. By contrast under Babiganda, Abacha, Buhari or Shagari all we have known is hardship. Each time under Northern leadership the economy went backwards. Get rid of your bigotry and see the real problem. We in the South and that includes Deltans must come together or we will suffer for many more decades to come.... 1 Like |
