TRAGEDY struck recently at 6, Kadri Avenue, Oluwo Village, Alagbado, Ogun State, when a landlord, Mr Tunde Alabi, 46, allegedly hit one of his tenants, Mrs Folake Akinola with nail-studded stick on the forehead over controversy about "holy ghost fire.

Sunday Tribune learnt from police sources at the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, that pandemonium broke out in the area on November 18, 2010 when some youths in the area stormed a church within the neighbourhood and burnt it down. Some members of the church, including the pastor, were equally beaten blue black.


The suspect, Mr Tunde Alabi, who is the owner of House 6, on the street, told Sunday Tribune that, "some youths invaded the church on the 18th of November and torched the place. They accused the pastor of practising Voodooism. Some members of the church, including my tenants, Mrs Folake Akinola and her husband, were equally beaten by the hoodlums who attacked the church. I was at home when the incident happened but I did not go out. I was inside my room praying".


However, problem started the following day when the deceased and her husband allegedly accused the suspect of being the brain behind the attack on the church and its members. They reportedly said he was always praying that Holy Ghost Fire should descend upon his enemies, saying that the fire that gutted the church was his handiwork and that he was the one who sent the boys to attack and burn down the church.


Explaining this aspect of the story, the landlord stated that "As usual, I woke up very early in the morning to observe my morning devotion and I prayed that Holy Ghost Fire should consume my enemies. That has been my prayer point for the past three years. I always pray that fire should consume my enemies. So, after my prayer on that fateful day, I came out around 6.30am and I was preparing to go to my workshop when the husband of the deceased came out to challenge me that I was responsible for the fire that gutted their church.


He equally alleged that I was the one who sent the thugs that attacked them in the church. He said God had answered my prayers and that was why the incident happened. I told him that I didn't direct my prayer to anybody in particular and that the prayers were against my enemies.


"All my explanations that I was not in any way connected with their misfortune did not make any meaning to them, as they descended on me. The husband hit me with a hard object and I fell down, unconscious. They poured water on me to resuscitate me. Immediately I regained consciousness, I also looked for a stick to hit the man, but it mistakenly landed on the deceased's forehead and she started bleeding. They took her to about four different hospitals before she finally gave up the ghost at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The incident happened around 6:30am, but the woman died around 3.30pm."


Speaking on the allegation that he was always engaging his tenants in one quarrel or the other, the landlord said: "I'm a very gentle person. I'm a mechanic. I am from Igbeti in Oyo State. I have two houses on the street. I moved into the area around 1995 and I have been living peacefully with my tenants and other landlords. My problem with this couple was my prayer point. They always complained about my usual request for Holy Ghost Fire to consume my enemies. There were other tenants in the house, but I don't know why the couple always complained about my prayer".
