Yar’Adua Stops EFCC From Arresting Atiku, Nnamani, Tinubu, Others

There were indications on Thursday that the President, Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua, had directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) not to arrest some top functionaries of the last civilian administration as the commission had envisaged.

Some of the top functionaries of the last administration allegedly penciled in for arrest by the EFCC included the former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; the former Governor of Enugu State, who is now a senator, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani; the former Governor of Benue State, who is also now a senator, Chief George Akume; the former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; the former Governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Kalu, and some other former governors.

The Chairman of the EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, had before May 29, 2007, when the last administration handed over power, said that a lot of governors would be arrested after their tenure must have ended over allegations of corrupt practices.

Sources told Saturday Tribune that the failure of the EFCC to arrest the former public functionaries was because of a directive by Yar’Adua that the commission should not arrest any of the former public office holders.

It was learnt that Yar’Adua further told Ribadu that even in situations where it became necessary for any arrest to be made, he (Yar’Adua) must personally give the clearance for the commission to do so.

Yar’Adua, Saturday Tribune learnt, gave the directive following complaints during his visits abroad that the EFCC was a political tool in the hands of the last government and his fear that such allegations could discredit the present government if allowed to continue.

Sources said that the complaint was more evident in the United States of America where some of the politicians, especially Abubakar and Kalu, had lodged complaints that the last government was persecuting them for political reasons and not for corrupt practices.

It was learnt that this was one of the conditions that Yar’Adua was given by some of the industrialised countries to get their support.

A Presidency source said, “I’m sure a lot of people would be amazed that some of these governors have been walking in and out of the EFCC in the last two weeks without being detained contrary to the threat of Ribadu.

“The reason for this is that Yar’Adua does not want to put in disarray the peace he has been trying to engender in the last two months with his decision to reach out to the opposition and the foreign countries with interest in Nigeria.

“Some of these countries, especially the United States of America, have said that the first way of reducing the tension was by disallowing the EFCC from arresting the former public office holders.

“Or do you think Ribadu, despite his numerous threats, would have watched Nnamani enter into the country and walk into the Senate as a free man after all the allegations the EFCC made against him?”

Barely 24 hours after Abubakar returned to the country, there were indications on Friday that the AC had put finishing touches to how it planned to engage the government of President Umaru Yar’Adua.

Sources close to the leadership of the AC told Saturday Tribune that after the reception held in honour of Abubakar in Abuja, the leaders of the party agreed to turn down the request by the Yar’Adua government for AC to participate in the Federal Government.

The National Chairman of the AC, Chief Bisi Akande; former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Abubakar; his running mate, Ben Obi, and some other national leaders of the party attended the meeting held on Thursday night.

It was gathered that the AC agreed to write Yar’Adua, rejecting the offer to participate in the government.

It was learnt that the letter would state the basis on which the AC would work with Yar’Adua.

The two major ingredients of the agreement were that Yar’Adua should reform the electoral process and restructure the country.

A party source who spoke with Saturday Tribune on Friday said the AC decided to meet on the decision of what to do with the overtures from the Yar’Adua camp because the issue seemed to have put the party in disarray since the inauguration of the Yar’Adua government.

The source said, “The position of the party has always been that we will not have anything to do with the Yar’Adua government.

“What necessitated the meeting on Thursday night was to make the party’s position clear to all members.”

One of the reasons the AC chose to ignore the request to participate in the Federal Government was that the party had decided to file a petition before the presidential election petition tribunal and that it would be counterproductive if it chose to participate in the Yar’Adua administration.

But Abubakar on Friday said that he would continue with his quest to pursue the alleged electoral malpractices in the April 21 presidential election through the electoral tribunal.

Abubakar, who stated this at an interactive session with newsmen in Abuja, said his party was yet to take any position on the overtures made by Yar’Adua.

He said the party might stick to its position by allowing the tribunal to make its pronouncement on the presidential election.

“We in the Action Congress (AC) are solid and are resolute in maintaining our stand as a formidable opposition to the administration,” he added.

Tinubu is likely to run into trouble very soon. Considering the above and the trouble he is causing in Osun, he wanted to export Lagos mafia, he's goin to run into trouble.

I was told by a reliable source that Tinubu was definitely going to eat beans (kirikiri), but I'm not sure why this man is still working around free and flexing muscle.

At this time, a smart man will lay low till things get settled; hence @ champredd, you might be right, this man seems to be asking for it. And sooner or later, he's going to get it.

We still don’t get it, do we…, kpele!
But for how long would we continue to fool and deceive ourselves?
Indeed we now live in an age where thieving ex-officials toss whatever bounty they thinks suits us in exchange for their freedom and their license to continue to steal.

How pathetic, yet we want to eschew corruption?

Tell me why Yaradua would attempt to handicap a Commission entrusted to annihilate crime (which includes jobbery by public officials) in our country by choosing to dance to the tunes of these bold kleptos.

These are our monies folks -  meant to build good roads, build schools for the people, develop their states- our national treasure, not theirs , yet we're making deals with them to forfiet our money. Kai, !!!

I say PROSECUTE PROSECUTE PROSECUTE, the evidences are convincing and if not can be derived beyond a reasonable doubt. (Fleeing the country should be a dead give away).
These crooks in our governement should serve jail time, and this would send the message to practising crooks, now in office.

If u lock them up, wipe all their nyash every morning for breakfast, truth go come out and money go begin apear from everywhere, even the ones way don declare.

I dont like all the stories I'm hearing about negotiations. If Yar'Adua needs all those corrupt politicians to consolidate his hold on gwament, then trouble is brewing, because it will be biz as usual.
Re: The List Of Arrested Corrupt Governors (after May 29th) by BigB11(m): 5:45pm On Jun 25, 2007
When too many are too corrupt for too long (ttt). One has to be very careful and think systematically before taking an action.

I can't blame Yar'Adua for his actions so far in regards to arresting corrupt governors. This is a very bright man, he thinks deeply before making decisions; unlike OBJ who usually thinks after taking an action.

A great leader must profoundly evaluate all available solutions before taking an action; you just don't jump because they say so.
Sooner or later, together we are all going to witness and appreciate President Yar'Adua's strategy in resolving this issue.

Just wait and see, time will tell.

The main aim of this admin now will be to win back the nigerian populace to his side that he can do by reverting the current price of petrol to what it was before that ole increased it to N75. To bring it down to N70 is a god sign but he should do more and not only in petroleum products.
Re: The List Of Arrested Corrupt Governors (after May 29th) by BigB11(m): 9:11pm On Jun 26, 2007
Ribadu is one of the main reasons why none of these governors has been arrested as yet.

If he had done his job accordingly, this new administration wouldn't have been hesitant to arrest these thieves, But Mr Ribadu and OBJ did such a sludgy unprofessional job that it will be irrational for Yar'Adua to follow the same steps.

My visit to EFCC no big deal –Dariye

Ex-Governor of Plateau State, Chief Joshua Chibi Dariye, has said his visit to EFCC was largely informed by the need to go and make some clarifications, saying he had to go because he has his reputation to protect and not because he had any deal with anybody as it was being speculated. In a telephone interview with journalists in Jos, Wednesday, Dariye said: “Truthfully, I have no deal with anybody.

“I have a reputation to protect. I was not compelled, and it was not part of any deal as it’s being speculated.”
According to him, as a respectable citizen, he sees no wrong in assisting a government agency in doing its assignments.

He explained that the many problems that besieged him while in office were borne out of sheer selfishness on the part of some elders and politicians in the state.

"There were those that profited from all the bickering, and I need to say that to a large extent a fundamental problem on the Plateau is that of rumour mongering in government circles."
Speaking on what happened in London, he said it was only aimed at ridiculing him into submission.
“But here am I today, in the next ten years or even before, I wondered where the people would be. Already, I see the scandals following them."

Dariye lamented the extent of squandering that characterised the six months administration of his deputy, Chief Michael Botmang, explaining, “I want to say I have nothing against Botmang. In fact, for a better part of our eight years together in government, I saw him largely as a father. But in a sense, I felt betrayed.”

He, however, said he could imagine the amount of pressure put on him by those who were bent on perpetuating the illegalities of his impeachment.

Dariye said further: "With a sense of history, I have regrets, but certainly I can say that I came, saw, and conquered. I gave Plateau my best in the circumstances. I left landmarks and achievements that generations can look to with a sense of pride, and that cannot be erased.”

He denied ever manhandling any EFCC operatives, saying, "I recall that at the height of harassment from the commission, I granted an interview during which I said if they continued, we on the Plateau would eat them as dogs.

At that time, the state was under a siege. But my alleged beating up of anyone was just a creative imagination of someone. I Joshua did not beat up anyone."
