Even if he has a double PhD, he's still a bad influence. Infact the higher the grade the higher his level of bad influence.

Being that it starts with consonant, I think it's right.

No, bro. It starts with a vowel sound /ˈɛ/. It's the sound that matters not the letter. You say "the word 'man' starts with an 'M'". Notice you don't say "a 'M'". Also notice that it is acceptable to say "a European" cause even though it starts with a vowel letter "e", it also starts with a consonant sound /j/ (pronounced like the "y" in in "yam").

H is a consonant but words starting with H are usually pronounced like it starts with vowels. You can't possibly say an House or an Horse, for example. How is this different?

H is a consonant but words starting with H are usually pronounced like it starts with vowels. You can't possibly say an House or an Horse, for example. How is this different?

Short Answer: Words that start with "H" are not always pronounced like they start with vowels. In the examples you gave, they both start with the consonant sound /h/. This can only be omitted by people with the popular H-factor (explained below).

Long Answer:
First, like I said it's the first sound that matters and not really the first letter. We use "an" if the first sound comes out as a vowel and "a" otherwise. This is regardless of the letter.

Now, let's address the examples you submitted. When a word start with the letter "H", it either silent or pronounced.

Scenario One: Silent H:
When "H" is silent, the next letter after it determines the sound. Example: "honour"(pronounced /ˈɒnə/), "honest"( pronounced /ˈɒnɪst/), etc. In these examples, you use "an" because they both start with a vowel (/ɒ/) as the first sound and the letter "H" is silent.

Scenario Two: Pronounced H:
"H" is said to be pronounced when it maintains it's own distinct sound (usually pronounced like a free flow of air from the mouth). This is usually the case when the letter is found inbetween two vowel sounds in a word. Example: inhale (pronounced /ɪnˈheɪl/). Notice that the letter "H" is pronounced as /h/. In many cases, this pronunciation is also adopted when a word starts with the letter; unlike in the first scenario where the next word determines the starting sound, the /h/ sound is actually pronounced here. Examples: house (pronounced /haʊs/), horse (pronounced /hɔːs/), etc. Notice that both words start with the the consonant /h/ sound (it is not silent) unlike the first scenario where the next letter would have determined the sound. Therefore, we use "a" as the right article before these words.

*H-factor:
This is a Nigerian expression used to describe the linguistic concept where people whose original languages don't have the letter "H" tend to treat all starting "H" as silent. This is why some mistakenly say "an house". Even those who rightly say "a house" sometimes feel it's awkward cause they think the first "H" is supposed to be silent. But no, it's not actually. This concept is a form of Mother Tongue Inference.

I wonder why Naira Marley or his PR team are trying so hard to project a false image of someone who admits himself to be a bad influence to youths? Maybe he's already thinking about life after music because he's definitely not going to last as a musician. Check through all his predecessors who specialized in singing trash like Lil Kesh, what has become of time; he sure knows the window for his short fame resulting from gross decadence and loss of values of our youths will soon be shut while he fades into oblivion
