A Houston man was stripped of his U.S. citizenship after he was convicted of arranging fake marriages for others and himself, authorities said today.

Ibraheem Adeneye, 33, and originally from Nigeria, had his citizenship revoked at a sentencing hearing on Monday, officials with the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Adeneye was convicted in May on charges of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, naturalization fraud, making a false statement to a federal agency and marriage fraud. U.S. District Judge Kenneth Hoyt sentenced Adeneye to the time he has been in custody. He is now subject to deportation upon release.

Jurors at this trial were told that agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement began an investigation after indications surfaced that Adeneye was setting up fake marriages between Nigerian nationals and U.S. citizens for the Nigerians to gain U.S. citizenship. The U.S. citizen faux spouses received cash in return, prosecutors said.

Investigators used a confidential informant and an undercover agent to remain in contact with Adeneye.

The investigation showed that Adeneye's previous marriage was fake and that documents submitted to Citizenship and Immigration Services for his U.S. citizenship falsely claimed that he was married and living with the same U.S. citizen spouse for the previous three years, officials said.
